Like many, I already upgraded to Windows 7 (free upgrade). However, now that it's installed (and assuming all bugs are corrected) I'd like to take advantage of another upgrade to Ultimate via a student discount.
I'd also really like additional RAM (up to 8gb) and a new mouse and external HD.
Needless to say, a blu-ray writer would be nice, but can't decide on internal (for convenience) or external for greater speed and durability. Anyway, that's a nice have and at the bottom of the list.
I sure hope Santa is a computer geek!![]()

nice ssds everywhere.
no need for ram here, or external disks (home server solves that), blue ray writer would be of no use as well.
so, all that i might want is moar ssds
and in january, one of the new 32nm processors.

So what is this thread about?
Is it what you should upgrade?
Or is it what "we" want to upgrade?
For me its nothing - my SSD falls into the christmas upgrade
(early one, merged with something else
)
-
Well, I'm hoping for Logitech Z-5500's or an external monitor for my Christmas, if that counts.
-
I acted too quickly and voted for GPU, but this is hardly upgradeable and I think it shouldn't even be in the poll.
Anyway, I'd go with CPU in January or SSD. -

grbac, actually many people have successfully upgraded their CPU's, but the option that I'm missing is 'replace notebook'.

Now, that, would be an upgrade!

Christmas came early for me. MSI BT receiver + RE0 headphones = me studying in bed listening to music
Too bad my internet down here is so crap that I couldn't get the Ultimate Ears TripleFi 10vi for $99
nor can I bring my desktop down here...

SSD!!
If only I had the money... -
Commander Wolf can i haz broadwell?
If I wasn't already running SSDs on all my systems, that'd be at the top of my list...
-
I voted for more RAM and am asking Santa for 2x4gb pc3 8500 1066mhz Cas 7 but since I've been a little naughty this year will settle for 1 4gb module to make 6gb total.
-
GPU if it was upgradeable...
-
Information sharing actually: Someone see what you're looking for then notifies you of a great deal they know about that you might have missed. That's how I got my backlit keyboard for $29 instead of $79. So basically it's the same as always but for the Holidays.
Now then, what about that Ram? Anyone? -
OK, so its what "we" would like, not what "you" should get
Thanks.
Well, as stated earlier, my SSD is part of Christmas
(even if its early) -
How come there is no option for "my laptop"? ^^
-
But I said GPU, not CPU hardly upgradeable. Read posts throughly.
-
LOL, I actually had it but took it out because I thought it would be too general.
-
I voted GPU and want the best I can get xD Probably the ATi Mobility Radeon HD 5890 when it's out, which would probably require 3 fans.
-
I just bought a G51VX-X3A, external enclosure w/ 1TB WD SATA, a 24" hdtv, logitech gaming headset for home and an mx518. I'm picking up a usb hub and power outlet for cafes. My next list likely includes a cooler, cosmetic mods, a second HD and a blu ray drive.
-
I've voted for GPU. lol
Best one I could fit in here is the HD4670, which is pretty much extinct, in terms of availability lol. I'm now looking for either a cheap HD4650 or at least, a 9600M GT.
-
i voted for accessory's. Im going to upgrade my lappy to run an external monitor. maybe 24 or 27 inch. i really want a 27 inch, but the 24 inch is a really great buy at 200 usd.
either way i want more screen space to work with. ive seen some folks with some really nice setups using an external monitor. so im gonna try that rather then buy a whole new desktop. -
I'm looking into a QX9300 for christmas myself =]
-
It's pretty amazing seeing your laptop on a big screen.
-
Well I bought the WD 640GB for the UltraBay as I don't really use my optical drive much. Other than that my system is about where I want it.

Yes, I just bought a Hanns-G 28" screen for USD 260 on Thursday, and Dirt 2 looks amazing! Well worth the price (I was considering either an SSD or a monitor). -
moral hazard Notebook Nobel Laureate
I will get myself a nice new motherboard.
-
I just gave me a present. My new laptop.
But I would love to upgrade to a large and fast SSD later down the road, and more RAM if I ever need it (the specs are on my profile) -
Not gonna happen, but if Santa dropped of a 920XM I'd be pretty happy with that.
-
And some cookies with it too?
-
Same over here, well, I'll be OK with Hitachi 250GB 5400RPM.
-
what i really want is a 256GB SSD....and also a QX9300 if possible (although the Q9200 looks much better bang for the buck)
of course since money wont be a problem for santa, i'd just say a brand new laptop lol, with the i7 on board...whatever the update for the M4400 will be -
tilleroftheearth Wisdom listens quietly...
-
I think it is clear that nobody want to upgrade ODD...hence me opting for a non-ODD laptop and using an external if needed.
-
i hope i can get a new laptop around christmas next year especially since i'm doing CAD and all in engineering... but there's stilla year to go... brb...
-
thats the update for the M6400, not M4400. As much as i'd love the power of the M6400/M6500, i travel too much for a heavyweight 17" notebook to be comfortable. The M4400 is a good balance. I can tolerate the weight, and the power is good enough.
also, the alienware 17" seems more appealing than a M6500 due to the switchable graphics IMO, since i dont need the workstation graphics. -
You dont? How come you have a M4400?
The thing I would love to upgrade on the new laptop is SSD.
but too expensive
-
I needed a WUXGA screen, business class build quality, and decent graphics. I would have gone for the latitude E6500 but the graphics were not powerful enough. I was sick of getting components replaced every 6 months when i had a consumer grade notebook. It just couldnt stand up to being chucked in my backpack, all the flights etc. I had a latitude from work, and was impressed at how much better it stood up to the rigors.
having said that, its now over a year since i got my M4400, and i havent had any time to game on it yet
i seriously need to buy crysis and see what all the fuss is about lol.
I really want a SSD too, but i cant justify the price right now. So im waiting for the 256gb capacities to drop to sensible levels. -
tilleroftheearth Wisdom listens quietly...
afhstingray,
sorry for the (wrong) update path. Just saw 'M' and thought they were equivalent. It seems though that there might be a M4500 soon though, huh? -
yep, spyshots of the HP and IBM equivalent have been floating around already, so i guess january will be the month of all the refreshes.
gonna be sad not having a current model anymore
oh well. will have to be content with this machine for the next 2-3 years at least. as such QX9300 and SSD look like tasty upgrades to give it in 2010
im curious though, how much of a heat/battery life impact moving to a quadcore will have -
At least you can undervolt the C2Q to give better battery life.
-
You know me so well..
What would you like to upgrade/accessorize for Christmas?
