    The difference is 4 pins. These 4 pins are understandably PCIe if the slot is mPCIe, or SATA if the slot is mSATA. They are on the same position. With some soldering and trace cutting one can exchange one for the other. The article states that mSATAs are rare, that's not true. The rare slots are the combined ones which can drive both mPCIe and mSATA. They are rare since they require extra chip that switches between PCIe and SATA depending on the card that's in the slot, also routing these lanes gets a bit more complicated as well.
