I just got a new hard drive and want to make sure it's free of bad sectors and other defects. Could anyone recommend a good program for doing this?

You can use a program called HDTUNE to check the S.M.A.R.T. diagnostics on your new harddrive. You can also use the program to run an error check on the drive

You can use the manufacturer's tools from their website. Those tools can check low level stuff which, depending on what kind of data, will be more in depth and sometimes more accurate than the "SMART" data.
