What's the maximum storage space available for a portable hard drive? Portable as in it doesn't need to be plugged into a outlet just to the computer?

    Thanks

the largest capacity portable harddrive is a 500gb 5400rpm drive, which either uses the hitachi 5k500 series drive or the samsung hm500li drive. Both are 500gb 5400rpm drives. The hitachi is a 12.5mm thick drive and the samsung is a standard 9.5mm thick.

they are a bit pricey, because of the harddrive inside. the inner drive retails alone for around $230-260, so its about $300 for the entire drive.
if you can live with a 320gb portable, i would suggest going down that path, cause they can be had for about $120.
you can find them typically at best buy stores if you want to pick up in person.
I would go for a western digital passport or one of those simpletech externals. as they are pretty good.

Would you go with a refurbish one or a new one?

I wouldnt ever buy a refurbished harddrive, especially if its for an external harddrive. You want the drive to last and be reliable. Refurbished means that the drive was either 1) it broke and was fixed, 2) the customer returned it for whatever reason, 3) the drive has issues,
You really should only buy harddrives new, unless you are getting them from a reliable friend or something like that. I wouldnt trust my data on a refurbished or recertified drive. The small savings from buying refurbished also costs, the peace of mind and knowing that your data is not very safe.

I wouldnt purchase a laptop from buydig, get it from newegg. Newegg is much more reputable, and they make million of transactions daily.
Newegg, Zipzoomfly, Ewiz and otehr major e-tailers are all safe to buy from.

If you have the option, have your laptop shipped fedex, I have had bad experiences with UPS, so if their is an option, go with fedex for shipping.
