I figured the market would clamor for a stopgap between msata and nvm-express enabled pci-e compatible drives - but so far I'm having trouble even finding a notebook compatible with the sparse selections of m.2 drives out there.
Now that I think of it does anyone besides SanDisk and Toshiba even sell a drive at the moment? I remember hearing Intel was on board, but then radio silence.

Intel has theirs on Amazon and newegg in limited quantities. The Lenovo TPad series can use them in limited capacities. MBA has them as welkl as the Sony VAIO Pro 13.

It had been 3 cpu generations since msata was out, and it aint even real popular today.
Think about the possibility for all the think and light dropping the 2.5" drive, nope, never happened. -

mSATA is gaining popularity, part of the problem until only the last year or so (until M4 actually) is that they were limited in capacity and performance compared with their 2.5" big brothers. Now there's little to no difference in performance or capacity or price between the two. Give it another couple years and they will become very popular. I don't quite understand the desire for the M.2 since mSATA's are already quite compact, I mean not much bigger than a wi-fi card.

Save a SATA slot !!!??
Can't seem to find a proper reason except some kind of business practice. -
What's the holdup with m.2 devices?
