Also, is there a noticeable difference if you have the same amount of either ram? On paper there would be, but what about real world?

    1GB running at 667Mhz = 1GB running at 533Mhz
    2GB running at 667Mhz = 2GB running at 533Mhz

Yep, that's right. The higher speed of the 667 is nullified by higher CAS latency. For the average user, the difference between the two is negligible.

    Get the "2 GB 533 DDR2"...

In daily usage, you'll hardly notice the difference between 667mhz and 533mhz.
Maybe gaming is different (maybe  )

But there's significant difference between 1gb and 2gb.
(moreover if you have dual core proc and doing multi-tasking)

    It's like this..
For ex. you want to run apllications that need 100mb RAM each.
With 1gb, you can only run smoothly 10-11 apps.
    But with 2gb, it's doubled (20-21 apps).

    .'. i would suggest 2gb :)

Definitely go for the 2GB here; I assume you're looking at a Dell? They charge a ridiculous amount for the 667MHz RAM, which is unjustified really. It provides no performance boost as gatordude said because of higher latencies. You won't notice any difference between the two. It's even hard to tell them apart using synthetic benchmarks.

Unless you're a serious gamer/multi tasker of big programs, 2 Gig RAM is overkill, and 667Mhz presents more latency therefor making it worse for gaming and web surfing. Your best bet is going for 1 Gig RAM 533MHz, you'll get the best "bang for your buck", and save a hella lot of money.

I agree that there is no significant difference in real performance between the two speeds of RAM. 2GB may be overkill but 1GB will soon get swallowed up. If the computer has integrated graphics then that will also need some RAM. Dual channel, which needs two RAM modules the same size, gives a theoretical enhancement in performance but I haven't seen it in reality.

If you are going over 1GB and you regularly use hibernation then you may need the Microsoft hibernation patch from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/330909.

If you look at another of the recent threads on this forum, someone is complaining that going from 1GB to 2GB memory didn't improve performance, so beefdonkey, don't assume that more RAM is faster. And everyone else, please *consider* the situation before making suggestions. More RAM is only better if the user actually *needs* more RAM. If that's not the case, faster RAM may be a better option (and saving the money by going with 1GB 533mhz RAM might be even better)

It depends a lot on what you use your computer for.

Name 10 apps that each use 100mb RAM, and are not just idling in the background.
Unless you can do that, and can provide a convincing reason why someone would be running all of them at the same time, your advice isn't exactly the most useful... ;)

    So beefdonkey:
Can you elaborate on exactly what you use your computer for. What kind of programs are running at the same time?

If I were you, I'd go with 2GB 533, capacity is more important than speed in my opinion.

More ram does not mean fast in single applications. If you are playing a game, switch to your email program, then to a web page for cheats, and then back to the game. The extra ram will speed the transition.

667Mhz vs 533Mhz is a very small difference. With out the latency it is hard to make the call but we are talking 5% difference in speeds. Even with low latency ram we are still talk 5%, I think some of the top end ram will yield 10-15%.

The clock cycle on the CPU makes allot more difference but then it depends on the type of system. I fyou look at tomshardware.com you will some information on this.

2gb of RAM is becoming more important every day...just go with the 2gb 533.

Well, yea i was wrong. It depends on what you need and how many bucks you have.. But if you have the money and want to choose between 1 GB of 667 or 2 GB 533 DDR2 Ram, the 2gb all the way! ;)

P'LEASE... I only use some kind of ILLUSTRATION here..
("It's like this...For ex..." Do you know what this means?)

Of course, there ain't no 10 apps that each use precisely 100mb RAM..
    It's just for an illustration...
I hope nobody misunderstand this.. :)

    Ten apps eh?
    1) Paintshop Pro
    2) Firefox with 15 tabs open or allot of flash
    3) Mia
    4) Corel Draw
    5)Map programs Garmin...
    6) Adobe Pro
    7) Peer to peer apps
    8) Any imaging or vieo editing program Aside from paint
    9) Windows explorer
    10) Adobe Priemer (may use 2bg if you let it)

And considering when your computer boots it has about 20 apps running in the background ram can be eaten up fast. Battle Field 1942 2 is known to take a GB.

i thought recently, dell was offering pretty reasonable prices for 2gigs of ram, namely 2gigs @ 533mhz. A couple of systems I was configuring had the RAM prices in the range of $160-$180, which is quite a bit cheaper than what newegg has to offer.
