I am buying a Dell notebook but am confused.

    What is better?

    A Inspirion 9300 Centrino M740 (1.73ghz) or Inspirion Core SOLO T1300 (1.66ghz)

Clearly the M740 looks fatser, but the Core Solo is newer technology. Not sure what to go for.

    Thanks

The Core Solo has a faster FSB (667MHz I think it was) compared to the Pentium M series (533MHz). So assuming the pricing is exactly the same (which it probably isn't) if you decide to go with the Pentium M you're losing 0.07GHz operating frequency for a 134MHz FSB gain. I think the Core Solo will be a better choice for you (though a Duo would clearly be a better choice if you can get one).

Bottom line, for the small sacrifice in speed I think the faster FSB will be the better choice for you (your taking a 4% loss in Operating frequency for a 25% gain in FSB). Now if there is a huge price difference then it may be worth it just to save the extra money and go for the older Pentium M CPU. That will have to be up to you to decide.

    Just my 2 cents...

How much is the price difference between the Core Solo & a Core Duo? It's probably worth putting down some extra money & cutting corners in other areas, as having a multicore system will reap greater benefits.

The Core Solo should be around the same speed/performance as the P-M 740. The increase in bus speed will help the Core Solo and also it is capable of using faster memory(although this effet is somewhat reduced due to the increased latency).

But as others have suggested if the Core Duo is not too pricey of an upgrade than definately go for the Duo.

It is through the Dell "Outlet" store which sells uncollected orders & they do not have any Core Duo's in stock.

The M740 is £608 with 512mb ram & the Core Sole T1300 is about the same with 1gb ram.

I'd say go for the Core Solo if it's around the same price. That way you'll also get a good amount of RAM too.
