Its nearly a hundred dollars more, how much better is it? I.E. Would i be seeing significantly more FPS in a game such as far cry 2? or is it something negligible such as 2-3 frames. At this point it just seems like a stock Gateway P-6831fx just isnt cutting it with its 1.6ghz T5450, Far cry 2 runs pretty poorly on higher settings.

Games depend alot upon CPU frequency, rather than CPU Cache. The T8300 will be a better option.

Apps that can utilise the cache, for eg. divx, winrar, cs3, etc will run better with a T9300. But the T8300 is good and fast enough for almost all CPU-intensive tasks.

You'll see a ~5fps increase with the T9300, which is not worth $100....

    Would i see quite a large performance increase with a t8300 over a t5450?
I average about 22fps on optimal settings in far cry 2, which are very high settings, it can go as high as 30 and as low 14

What is the CPU usage like in tskmgr..?

Is it 100% all the time, or 100% at intervals....on both cores

T8300 2.4Ghz 3MB L2 vs T9300 T9300 2.5 6MB L2. The speed difference is what about 4%. Well you brought up FPS and remember performance does not directly equal a FPS improvement. OK so you get 30 FPS on average with the T9400? If CPU speed correlated with FPS you would get 28.8 with T8300 on speed. L2 cache is the hard one. I think about 8% is a reasonable difference on demanding tasks. Well you add 8% to 4% you get 12%. 30 FPS would be just over 26 FPS. Since games are not for the most part CPU intensive/dependent. I suspect you will only lose a couple of frames at the critical speeds. I mean if you lose 10 frames at 100FPS what do you care?

Generally T8400 vs T9400 is considered about 8% to 12% difference by those of us who have looked into on this site.

And a point from paladin44 who owns Power Notebooks, he said generally a 18% to 20% is what is needed for a user to perceive a difference. Only at tops 12% and not on games.

You should be fine with either.

What is GPU? You already know a FPS? If you are comparing two different systems be careful as more than one component can be different and effect performance.

    Specs:
    1.6Ghz T5450 dual core
    8800GTS 512MB
    3GB RAM DDR2

Far cry 2 has a built in benchmarking component, so i used that to test the games performance.

OKI Thought you were buying a computer. The $100 is just buying a CPU?

Well makes no difference more to the point of my first post. As I thought same system. T5450 1.667Ghz 2MB L2 so a T8300 has a 41% clock difference plus 3MB vs 2MB? You do the math, either would be a very large improvement.

Edit: If I had the money and would not affect other components I would get the T9300. It does not make since but I would do.

T9400 is incompatible with the older chipset that the Gateway here is based on.
Stick with the T8300 or T9300 - either will serve you well.

TehSuigi is very correct T9300 is right T9400 is not compatable. Opps! I had too many numbers in my head.

No worries - there's too many four-digit numbers being used in computers, IMO. Intel and AMD use them for their CPUs AND ATi and NVIDIA use them for their GPUs!
It's now possible to have a (t)9500 of one and a 9500(m gs) of another!
