Hp have 1280x800 screen laptops that come with Blu-ray, Would you see any difference between blu-ray and dvd on this screen?
I thought blu-ray only matters if you have a HD screen (1080p or w/e)?

There are two proper blueray resolutions 1280x720 and 1920x1080. So yeah it is worth it. Usually the player will scale the reso up from 720 to 800. Although this loses a tiny bit of quality/sharpness it will still be alot better than dvd.

If I was to connect the laptop to HD LCD Tv via hdmi would It use 1280x800 or 1920x1080 (the tv's resolution)

1920x1080 if you configure it that way.

My friend has Blu-ray and actually you can see a difference between bluray and DVD quality, even though his screen supports 720p only and not the full HD 1080p. But if you look from a distance, yes, you don't see any difference at all I think (my friend thinks differently but never mind). But the main purpose of the bluray is that you can connect the laptop to HDTV with a HDMI and enjoy the quality of the Full HD there (like a PS3 I guess).

Also if u one that writes blu-ray disks they have like 10X the storage of a single layer dvd. I think it's somewhere around 50gb. basically hdd size removable storage

Blueray video looks a lot better than DVD video even on my netbook with 1024x600 screen.

Blu-ray will always be of better video quality compared to DVD if you manage to play it with a compatible machine.

If you had a 720x480 16:9 screen, blueray video will look worse. LOL

DVD stores videos in 720×480 (ntfs, pal a bit different). so scaling down a blueray to 1280x800 (or 720 with borders, actually) still means 2 2/3rd the pixel detail compared to a dvd.
but one thing is, the scale-down is not 1:2 or similar => it's not without losses actually. but it still looks better than a dvd. -
