    Two part question.

    1) What screen sizes have you used on all your previous laptops?

    3 for me, 17.0, 14.1 and 15.4.

    2) What is your preference and why?

Mine is 15.4 or 14.1. I wont go any smaller or else I have to start squinting and sitting super close to the screen just to see it :( Anything over 15.4 makes the laptop way too heavy as youre looking at min. 7lbs.

14" is good for lots of traveling, especially by airplane. fits nicely on the tray. But 15.4" is my size of choice.

There are a lot more choices these days btw. Like 15.6, 16.4 etc... with the advent of the 16:9 laptop. 15.4" might actually be a dieing breed.

I am a fan of 15.4" laptops. They have a nice balance between size, power and portability.
I hated my 17" laptop mainly cause it was very unreliable. But I have a love for big screens.
My next laptop is going to have a 24" 1920x1200 panel on it, so I am fan of screen real estate.

But it really depends on what you do.
I do CAD, so the higher the resolution, and larger the screen, the better.

    That's what she said. :p

Seriously though, I find 15.4" to be the best size for people not like KTRON, as well, those that don't need ultraportability.

For a laptop, 14.1" hits the spot. That's all I've had for my laptops, but I've used bigger and smaller. The MacBook, while being compact, I just wouldn't want to edit images on. As it is, I'd like a higher resolution for my 14.1", but I do like the size. For a netbook or desktop, of course, it would be different.

15.4" on my last 3 laptops. 17" is too big to carry a lot, and I travel a lot. Smaller is too small, and I have to be able to write and debug code while I'm traveling. Also my last 3 laptops have been 1400x1050, my newest laptop is 1680x1050. I'd prefer more pixels still; waiting for more makers to use that 15.4" 1920x1200 RGB-LED display (besides Dell)...

Youre crazy 17'' is way too big for a laptop, it totally defeats the purpose of even having one since theyre considered desktop replacements. I had one in the past and it was a total nousense lugging around a 9 lb monster.

the 18.4" I use is quite perfect, the screen is big and good enough to work with it without an external monitor for hours. and I can still transport it from one place (like home to uni) to another, as it's 3.8kg. 15.4" is still way too big for me to carry it, ~3kg is just not practical. I will buy a 10" netbook with 1.2kg soon, because I need a really portable notebook, but can't afford a samsung/sony/lenovo/etc. ultraportable.

    1) What screen sizes have you used on all your previous laptops?

    15.4

    2) What is your preference and why?

At this point I'd say 15.4 - it's a nice size, a reasonable weight, and can pack a good amount of power. If I had to choose a different size, I'd probably go 17.

Even at 17 inches it's not really heavier than many textbooks. And if you're just going to have one computer, doesn't a desktop replacement rather make sense? Of course if you were moving it around all the time it probably wouldn't be the best choice - part of the reason I did get 15.4 instead - but if you don't move your laptop around all the time it'd be fine.

I actually kind of like the heavier weight. Feels more substantial, you get a nicer keyboard. A modern 12.1 inch (old ones were as heavy as 15.4 now) already is pretty small; a netbook would be way too small for me.

For me, it used to be 13.3", but I am typing this on 8.9"! So, 8.9"-13.3" is fine for me. 14" is the largest I am willing to go, never want a 15.4" ever again.

anything bigger than 15.4" i think it makes sense to get a desktop and a netbook lol...

but if you dont need much graphics power, then smaller sizes are fine. but if you're using it as your main machine i think 15.4 is the sweet spot.

my sis has an xps1210 which is a 12" notebook but quite powerful, she docks it with a 24" monitor, wireless kb/mouse when at home.

i mean the size of a power adaptor for a lot of 17" models is already the size and almost the weight of a netbook!!!

    1) What screen sizes have you used on all your previous laptops?

My previous laptop had a 14.1" screen with 4:3 aspect ratio. It was an IBM Thinkpad T23 - very stout machine.

    2) What is your preference and why?

I prefer 14.1" with 4:3 aspect ratio, but currently I have a 13.3" screen with a 16:10 aspect ratio. I like these sizes because they're a very good balance of size and portability and the smallest size with a full size keyboard which is important to me.

The bad thing is that a 14.1" 4:3 is now difficult to find because everything is going wide screen now. My 14.1"4:3 and my 13.3" 16:10 are the same width, but the 13.3" is about 1.5" shorter to make a wide screen laptop. Personally, I find the 14.1" 4:3 more useful than the 13.3" 16:10.

The new 14.1" wides are as wide as some of the older 15.4" models which I don't like.

    8", 10", 11.3", 13.3", 16.4"

16.4". The largest notebook I can carry without having to feel that I am carrying a load of bricks. My 16.4" weighs only 6 pounds. Sony is still the best when it comes to size to weight ratio.

    16.4"

The height of a 15.4" with the width of a 17" so you get a lower profile and the full sized numpad.

Games and apps are going to adapt and be designed specifically for a 16:9 ratio because that's where the market is going.

All they really have to do is just squeeze a dual GPU into the chassis.

Yes I completely agree! The new widescreen is stupid, really. As close to square should be optimal and the new format is just weird. If it atleast was on the other angle, portrait instead of landscape...

It used to be 14.1 because of the portability.

But after experiencing my beautiful WSXGA+ on a 15.4" screen, I gotta stick with the 15.4 from now on.

Perhaps a better question is what is your ideal keyboard size. If you prefer the standard size then the smallest screen size is about 13 inch.

To me, the bigger the better, but since the laptop still needs to be portable, I find 15.4" to be the best balance.

Currently, I am using a 12" laptop and am fine with the screen size, but my ideal size would be a 14" WXGA+. But, graphics power is limited in 14" laptops, so 15" is also fine for me. Anything larger destroys the mobility aspect of laptops, in my opinion.
