It's anyone's best guess right now. Yes the chips are shipping soon, but when we will see them in a laptop is unknown. You'd think that the manufacturers would want to move out most of their old inventory before launching new technology so they don't get stuck with it. If we do see it soon it'll probably be on limited platforms or series. Don't get your hopes up, it could be a while yet.

I was in the same boat as you were, but i figured the difference between the duo and duo 2 are not going to be huge, so i just decided to order my vaio.

Core Duo laptops will be out around August, but may well be delayed due to the implementation of new devices into the new Santa Rosa (next edition of Centrino kind of thing) platform.

Microsoft are pushing Intel to produce the Core Duo 2 quickly as it is an excellent opportunity for Microsoft to sell Windows Vista. I would cancel the order. At the end of August, notebook manafacturers will be keen to sell off laptops containing the original Core Duo. So, even if you wait for Core Duo 2 and Intel make a sudden announcement at the end of August that they will be delayed the launch of the new processor, you will be able to easily get an older laptop for a great price.

Buy a core Duo now...upgrade to a merom in a year or so when Vista really starts to take over. I believe it's a 20% performance difference between the Merom and Yonah processors.

Core 2 Duo won't be OUT for a while. Sure, they may be released in August..but they won't be implemented into laptops will Winter 2006. Buy the laptop now..upgrade to Merom later.

The Meroms will be announced July 23rd, and should be shipping mid-August. Expect them to be in notebooks, at the earliest, late August - mid-September.

The Santa Rosa platform will come out next year with Vista - it is the next-gen Centrino platform (replaces the current) and will have slightly different (and faster) Meroms with an 800MHz FSB and has a host of new technologies.

If you can wait a few days after school starts to order a laptop and have a few extra bucks to spend, wait for the Core 2 Duo. But you never know whats going to happen.

They may be coming out next month but i doubt we will actually see them in laptops until Oct-Dec timeframe. Conroe will probably take priority and become available sooner in systems (Aug-Sept)
