Your machine uses DDR2 533 (PC2 4200) RAM, has 2 memory slots, and max support 2 GB total.

How much RAM do you have now?

    1 GB is like $20 from newegg.com:

    or

    2 GB (2 x 1 GB) for $40-$45:

    Another 1501 owner I see.
Check the users manual, nice guide there.
Another good guide is here, and yes I know it's a linux site, still a good guide.
    2GB is the max, so I'd get 667MHz DDR2 RAM 1 GB x2, for a total of 2GBs.
    Will also be faster.

Not to hard, just follow that guide I linked to.
However this isnt going to make it a decent machine, its still going to be out of date and a budget machine when it wasn't out of date.

    What laptop do you have?
If you have a ddr2 compatible laptop, you simply have to find the memory bay, and install the memory.
Usually on dell and hp laptops, the memory is located on the bottom of the laptop.
On IBM/Lenovo's they are usually under the palmrest, requiring you to partially disassemble your laptop.

Once you find the memory bay, simply remove the current memory, by pushing gently on the white clips which hold the memory in the slot. Than the memory card will pop up about 40 degrees. Than remove it and install the new memory card in reverse order.

Two slots and no you don't have to change software. Not sure on model both slots could be together or could be separate.

It is called a grounding strap. I just touch something metal with my finger prior to handling RAM, that will discharge you.

There are special bracelets that you can use to connect to something (usually the PC) to ground yourself so you don't kill anything because of static electricity. However, all I've ever done is just touch a grounded computer before I start digging, and I haven't had a problem yet.
