    I'm looking to upgrade my CPU, but i don't seem to find any place where you can buy a boxed T7800....is it not available for retail, or am I not looking hard enough?

    it takes less than 5 min to upgrade CPU in vostro 1400, but for T61, it might be another story.

    Or possibly because the manufacturers offer the CPU's at a lower price than what the consumer can buy and upgrade himself.

    It's actually very straightforward....

    How come then it's extremely easy to find the T7700?

    I assume if you take two Dell Vostro 1400's for example, one ordered with the base CPU, and the other ordered with the top CPU, the cooling system will be identical? Any other changes when you order a faster CPU?

    Usually if it's a faster CPU in the same "series" (ie T7200, T7400, T7600 or T7300, T7500, T7700) there won't be any difference between laptop models besides the chip itself.

    In other cases like say a P-M Banias to a P-M Dothan you may need a BIOS update, but hardware should still be the same. I think cooling usually depends on the laptop chassis rather than the chip installed, that's probably why nobody offers an X7800 in 13 inch form factor.

    Thanks for the info!

    I imagine the fan would be a little busier on a T7700 than my T5470, correct?

    How is it the T7100 and T7700, for example, have vastly different clock speeds, yet the same thermal?

    Thermal is usually more closely related to voltage than to clock speed. And since voltage is pretty much constant over the T7x and T5x lines it makes sense that the thermals are similar.

    If you look and the LV and ULV chips you'll notice that they use up to 0.5 less volts than the mainstream chips and therefore run at a lower thermal specification.

    P = IV.

    Again, you are a great source of info, thanks!!!

    I did not know that about voltage vs. clock.
