Where do you see SSD prices being 6 months from now? 256 under $90?...

Just curious what you guys think.

If you were to guess what a sony 830 or 840 would be 6 months from now, whaddya think?

It's mostly a curiousity, and a future purchase but i'm not upgrading yet.

My guess is that the price will stay where they are - unless we get a consumer version of an Intel S3700 sometime soon.

$90 for 256GB SSD is not going to happen even by early 2014 - but would love to be proved wrong.

I am basing this on the fact that as long as they are selling at current prices, they will continue to sell for close to these prices while making more profit going forward (no more R&D investment and all...).

If/when a new product (like the S3700 consumer edition...) comes along and gives us a choice (even at a much higher price I would certainly switch all my systems over in a heartbeat...) - then we'll see today's 'old' tech going for the price they deserve to really be at.

In the early days (2007-2010), $/GB halved pretty much annually, but that ended around early 2011. Nowadays, pricing is a lot more stable - lower capacity (128 GB or less) drive prices have been pretty much flat for the past 2 years and while higher capacity (256 GB and 512 GB) drive prices still fall by maybe 20% per year, even at that rate $90 for 256 GB won't be the case until 2016 if current pricing trends continue.

There was a big push to get SSDs down from $10/GB to $1/GB, but now that we're at (and slightly past) the $1/GB level, there doesn't seem to be much motivation to get from $1/GB to $0.10/GB.

    Generally agreed.

    But see below. :)

Pricing can and does vary widely now.

e.g. I bought a new 2.5" Intel 320 (120GB) SSD a week ago from an Amazon 3rd party dealer at $119 + $5 shipping. The catch was that the seller had removed the UPC from the box.

And there was a 2nd dealer then selling at $120 + $5 shipping. But 5 minutes ago lowest I see is $150 + $5 shipping. All missing the box's UPC code.

OTOH aside from occasional UPC cut out of the box type stuff (which I've only seen at Amazon), I agree with others in this tread that I don't see big changes in SSD pricing for the next year.
