I have an old IBM desktop and a Dell Inspiron laptop that are running XP fine except they both need more RAM as the IBM has only 384 MB and the Dell 512MB.
Where's a good place to purchase RAM? Should I just buy it from Crucial online? Is there a different brand I should consider or a better place from which to purchase Crucial memory?

I'd hit up ebay or Craigslist. Buying new outdated memory can be expensive.

Newegg is often good. Try Google (Shopping) Product Search to find the cheapest

What model desktop is the IBM?

Crucial wants $60 for a 512MB SIM - OUCH!!!!! -
What do you expect? It is old technology with little demand.

if there is a local computer recycling/refurb center, they may have piles of old ram. Try and getting in touch with your companies IT people. They never throw anything away, especially memory.
