I got asked a question by a friend yesterday and didn't know the answer so I thought I would check with the pros here.

He has the previous XPS 15 model and would like to upgrade his DVD reader to Blu-Ray. We did a quick check on tigerdirect and couldn't find internal slim readers (only externals and those for desktops). So are these sold and if so where would be a good place to get one?

The CA10N should be the one you need. Personally though, I'd call Dell directly and see how much they charge. I ordered one on e-bay from one of the bigger sellers, and it was defective. He sent me a replacement, and that was defective too. Looks like the drives were non-working system pulls and not refurbished as the seller claimed. Sometimes it's better to pay a little more.

EDIT: Not sure which model your friend actually has but the drive I suggested is slot loading, so just make sure his laptop is slot, not tray loading. :)

You may need to purchase blu ray playback software to watch movies if the drive does not come with any...This might run an extra $80-$100...

Looking on the Dell parts site it isn't listed. Are there any online retailers that would have this other than my friend tying his luck with ebay?

Good luck with dell. They are terribly unhelpful when it comes to 'upgrades'. I tried to order a higher res screen through them cause I couldn't stand the stock one and I was basically told to go eff myself in 7 different ways.

You'll find that a lot of online retailers have accounts on ebay. I bought my screen from 3 separate places that all turned out to be the same seller. I still don't have a fully working one yet. It might be a crap shoot, but at least with ebay you have protection through paypal

There are plenty of online retailers that sell appropriate drives, although you might want to double check if that XPS 15 has a PATA ODD or a SATA ODD. You can then try searching for the appropriate type on, say, Amazon ("PATA Blu-Ray" or "SATA Bu-Ray"... yes, I got possible results for both through Amazon).
