So my ac adapter or whatever the little box is broke along with all the power sockets(excluding one).
My laptop is Clevo W860CU
How could i find a new one? How can i know if it will work? Or can i only use the same type one? I don't really care as long as it works and doesnt risk my computer blowing up![]()
Also it needs to work in Finland (i heard there's different types of power cords in different countries?)
My battery life seriously drains like 2% each minute on power saving mode so i can't check here very often. Pardon my slow replies.

look on ebay for a WC860CU power adapter... u should find one..and depending on whether ur cable is toast or not , ur new adapter should work..
-
It's not that old a machine, right?!
Normally that will make this a warranty case.
Unless you have seriously abused it.
If that's the case, ebay is the way to go. -
I have no idea why it broke, but i think it's something with this building because every power outlet around the spot is not working.
I'm pretty sure the adapter is the only thing broken here because the light doesn't go on and it smelt like burnt
What it i don't find one in ebay? is it possible to use a non-W860CU adapter?
If yes then how do i know it's ok to use it? -

You need to match three requirements:
(i) Output voltage of the PSU
(ii) The output current / power of the new PSU should be equal or more than the old PSU
(iii) The power plug that goes into the computer must have the same shape / size / polarity as the old PSU.
Buying a PSU which claims to be compatible with your computer means that these aspects should be correct.
You should also look at the universal PSUs made my companies such as Belkin and Kensington. These may cost a little extra but have the advantage that you can re-use the PSU.
Don't worry about the mains cable. 99% of PSUs use either a 3-pin "cloverleaf" or 2-pin "Fig-8" connector. Also, don't worry about the mains power rating. All notebook PSUs that I have encountered have a universal power rating in the range of 100 to 250V, 50 to 60Hz which means that they can handle the mains power of just about anywhere on this planet.

This suggestion may cost a bit up front, but could save you from buying yet another adapter in the future (as well as protect your other electronics) - buy a UPS with decent power conditioning to clean up the power before it hits the adapter. A surge protector helps in some situations, but typically doesnt really do much with slight variations in power harmonics.

Here [Holland] it's a waste of money - in the last 15 years the grid has never let me down. -

I always use an in-line surge protector such as this (3 pin versions are also available) as a first line of defence against power-relate problems. In my experience the standard switch mode PSUs are very tolerant of most power problems except excessively high voltage.

ebay ebay ebay
Buy from a trusted vendor, and also try to get a name brand first - OEM 2nd.
They almost always list the model that it is compatible with - do check the wattage out, though!

Right thanks everyone
My laptop battery died sooner than i thought, so i couldn't access internet again on weekend.
I found this:
http://cgi.ebay.com/CLEVO-M570TU-M5...Computing_LaptopAccess_RL?hash=item2a061049f8
it looks good to me. I just need to learn to use ebay first
We use the things with 2 round pins on the end.

I decided to buy an igo everywhere , version 75 it is 70watt , it is a combined car/mains power adaptor , the 130 version is 100watt
I got the 75watt version off ebay new for £25 delivered. -
tangent: I used to live in a brownstone where turning on the microwave while the TV was on caused the lights to dim, then come back on - not a big deal. However, I did this once in the summer with the AC on. When the bell went off to signal the end of the cooking time, the breaker tripped and took out 1/4 of the building. No, not my floor. The entire South quarter (vertically) was on the same breaker. Fear the cheap electricians. -
Be wary of non oem power supplies from ebay. I bought one that was total crap from a "trusted seller." It only costed me about 15 USD, but the hassle of now having to get another one after only having the ebay one for a week is worth the extra money. I'm looking at getting a universal one like the igo or Kensington.

I was just using my laptop like any other time. Nothing special was going on and i didn't do anything different at the moment it happened.
Everything just suddenly shut down and my ac adapter said "pop!".
Someone recently came in to turn the fuse switch which i didn't know existed in my room. Everything works normally again...except the ac adapter which is still toast.
I'll have to check out the universal adapters. -
anyone have any experience of the Antec NP-100?

It might be worth looking at the price of the car/mains adaptors as they are great in an emergency , I am running my notebook on a car battery now with the iGO Anyware85 i got today
EDIT : it look like the iGO Anyware85 is discontinued , must be why i got it for £25 , I checked the iGO website and they dont seem to have an notebook car/mains alternative ????
Where to buy new AC adapter?
