There isn't a subforum to put this in that makes sense, so I'll drop it here, as upgraders would want to know this more than anyone else.

Hey. Where should I (you, we, everyone) go to find out about laptop technical specifications that aren't considered important?

For example, before purchasing I would need to know how many mini-PCIe slots a laptop has. I would also prefer a laptop whose motherboard (or MXM card) uses a mini-DisplayPort connection to the LCD panel.

These types of specifications are rarely mentioned in a datasheet and most times not even in the user manual, apparently it's considered design engineering level and not end user?

If I have a specific laptop in mind, posting about it on various forums might yield the answer, but what if you wanted to make purchasing decisions on this data? With no idea whose units support what, it's very hard to narrow down the choices.

    Any ideas?

(I wish I spoke German, notebookcheck forum would be the Über geeks to maintain such data. The notebookcheck.net in English is a weaksauce version of the original.)

You're best bet would probably be looking at the service manual and just google in general. Detailed hardware spec's beyond the general consumer data usually requires a bit of research as no one place populates it all.

on top of that, component part numbers and suppliers wil change duringthe production run of a product.

this is one reason why 'real' commercial equipment costs more than consumer grade gear. the internal components are solidly spec'd out, the supply chain is well defined, and the manufacturer/systems integrator guarantees the availability of parts and assemblies of a certain specification for a longer period of time.

Certain laptop OEMs have more detailed spec sheets hidden somewhere online, you just have to hunt for it. For example, Thinkpads have the Tabook, which lists many of the part variations (ie, different LCD panel suppliers), but even that doesn't include some of the details you're asking about. Your best bet in that case would probably be posting here or on a manufacturer-specific forum and asking for further details.
