Hey I'm looking to upgrade the ram of my Lenovo y50 from 8gb to 16gb. Can someone link me to a good compatible 8gb one? Thanks!

Just make sure it's 1.35V DDR3L which the mobile Haswell CPU requires.

will it support CL9 timing (the GSKILL problem)? Or does it have to be CL11?

GSkill Problem? Find out what your current one it. Your system will match to best compatible speeds and timings. I can't imagine any recent RAM not being CL9 at 1600MHz.

The GSKILL Ripjaw series is very well reviewed and is CL9 and on newegg.ca here and the price is good but there are multiple CL11's too and they are all in the same range of price. People have bought them assuming that 1.35v was enough and then finding out that their laptops (Mostly some dell workstation) won't use it cause it need CL11. I don't know much about ram timing and whether you can replace CL11's with CL9's or vice versa, or they have to always be the same timing (Obviously mixing timings is not gonna work) and what timing people have identified on the 2X4 gig in the y50. People have said above that the ram has to be 1.35v 204pin but said nothing about the timing, that's why my question is to specify further.

CL9 or CL11 will not make an iota of differene in real life, even memory specific benchmarks barely pick up on the difference (<0.5%). If you're really concerned just grab the CL11 sticks.

It is not compatiable as you need similar memory which runs at 1.35V and not 1.5V due to Haswell only working with DDR3-L RAM which runs at 1.35V..

I actually added it and it works, lol.

Any harm if I continue using it ?

You got lucky with the silicon lottery then. 1.5V ram may work at 1.35V if the ICs are good and can tolerate the reduced voltage. Don't think there will be any potential harm, other than random crashing during heavy usage because the ram is not being fed enough juice.

Valued17, you may run Prime95 for some time to make sure. You may want to underclock&undervolt your CPU substantially, since you'll be testing memory and won't need the system to become too hot in the process. Also, Memtest running from DOS bootable flash may be a good idea, but it takes forever to perform a complete scan.

Valued17, it is perfectly safe on a properly cooled machine with adequate power supply. Just watch your temps, and if something climbs over 90C, stop the test and start thinking about undervolting, cleaning, repasting, etc. =)

Or just get 1.35V DDR3L and stop worrying :p

I'm surprised that it did.. Haswell is only supposed to work with DDR3-L but you are lucky.. It might cause extra wear on the IC's in the long term or even failure so even if it works, I would get DDR3-L memeory...
