My Sony D56A burner is dying so I am looking for a new one. Anyone have any opinions on which replacement drive I should go for?

I personally like NECs and LGs. Use high quality media for best results no matter the drive.

Yes, one of the cheap ones in a Black Friday ad.

I've had 3 LG burners, 2 for desktops and one in my current laptop and they are tops, I can thoroughly recommend an LG. Mine is a GMA-4082N but I have no idea if it's compatible with your notebook or not!

Thanks guys. I think I am going to go with the NEC 5540 from Newegg.

Anyone know if it works with the Inspiron 6000?

Yeah it will. You'll have to switch faceplates to get it to line up properly.

I use a Sony DW-D56A as well; lately mine has had some problems reading certain discs. I would definitely go for an NEC drive, they are of very high quality, and are also very quiet.

I got a NEC DVD Burner (6750A) to replace CDRW/DVD combo drive, and I love it.

Are most dvd drives in laptops interchangeable now or is this a dell thing?

The optical drive in most laptops is removable; look on the bottom of your laptop under the drive, and there should be two screws; remove those, and the drive can slide out.

The only potential problem with upgrading the optical drive on certain laptops is the benzel - sometimes it is a special shape. Normally it can be interchanged with the generic benzel on the new drive though.
