Do you need speed or storage?
And the 1tb drive is a 12.5mm. See if your computer can take 12.5mm drives.

Except that he has a USB 3.0 enclosure, so the 5400 RPM will probably bottleneck before you hit the limits of the USB. I've heard the Seagate 750 GB 7200 RPM is pretty meh in performance, though, so it probably won't be much better than the 1 TB overall, apart from the size issue.

If it's external I'd opt for space. I've been very happy with my Toshiba Canvio.

If performance is really an issue, you go with a 3.5" drive which will blow the socks off and be cheaper than any 2.5" drive. If you want a compact 2.5" drive, just get as much storage space as you can. It will be "fast enough" anyway because most of the time the drive's speed will not bottleneck anything.

He already has a USB 3.0 enclosure, though, so unless he doesn't want to use it, his form factor choices are limited.

Well if you don't intend it to be portable, then just buy a 2TB drive and be done with it.

Oh, then in that case unfortunately you are limited to 2.5" drives.

I would go with 7200RPM coz the 5200 slows down your computer performances
