Reading here is seems like the LED LCDs create the best laptop displays. What large screen notebooks (16" and up) have LED LCD's? I belive the Sony F series does. Any others?
-
Dell Studio XPS 16
And I think the new Alienware laptop's come with LED screens, but I'm not sure. -
Dell Precision M6500, HP Elitebook 8740W, Lenovo W710.
-
What is your specific application OP? That might narrow the search since not all LED LCDs are created equally.
-
Photoshop work; image editing.
-
The HP Envy has a white LED screen (15.6"... may not be large enough for you). The XPS16 has the choice of either an RGBLED or White LED.
-
I like the XPS16 but the screen is a bit small for what I want and it's expensive. Configured with 16" screen and not even a BlueRay reader nearly $2000 with tax and shipping.

I'd say for photoshop, the high-end HP EliteBooks that have the "HP DreamColor" are going to be some of your better screens because it's RGBLED. And also Dell makes a couple of models with RGBLED backlit panels. For professional work Alienware (IMO) is just a little too "in-your-face" with their designs, but their notebooks do have some great screens (courtesy of Dell).

Never reject a suggestion (it's bad manners), especially when you didn't give a clear explanation of what you wanted. You beat me too it, but the OP already has price issues so this may be out of his budget?I haven't read anything good about AW screen. In fact, all the reviews I've seen so far, rate them as sub par.
-
Actually I should have specified that I was referring to the M17 and all the negative reports of it's crappy screen. I have the M15 review from Laptop Magazine and it confirms you statement. Apparently, when people complained about the poor screen quality of the M17, AW was listening

Actually, I've seen some great deals on refurbished HP EliteBook's with the DreamColor panels. The price point has generally been around 1100-1400, and that's with the nVidia Quadro graphics solution also. But yea, about the AW screens... in the past, they haven't been really anything to write home about, but since they started putting the same panels as the have on some of the Dell Precision models as options on the M15/17x they have really improved. But this has only been very recently.
EDIT: you posted a reply before I could finish mine..lol -
That's the problem with text; it doesn't accurately represent your appreciation/feeling. I'm very thankful for anyone's suggestion. I was just responding that after he made the Dell suggestion I checked and configured and the Dell is not a good bargain.
I'll make a deal with you: I'll try and more accurately express my thanks if you don't jump to conclusions that I'm being negative. OK?
Thanks to everyone for their time and responses. They are all taken seriously. I'm off to the middle east in a couple weeks and need to find something asap. As well as everything else I'm trying to take care of with my family as I'll be gone for months, I'm trying to spend my money as wisely as possible and find a laptop that I really want. -

Is this the type of price you're looking for? Or would you like to steer clear of refurbs?
-
I actually started another thread with a FAQ of what I was looking for and this thread was a question about screens specifically and if the LCD was the best for things like Photoshop which requires true color and consistant contrast and colors throughout the screen.
Here is my FAQ thread: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=455561
No refurb is good. I have a Dell refurb right now and it's been a great laptop. It's just three years old now and a bit slow. Oh I just saw your post.
I'd like an i7 or Quad core, at least 4GB ram, decent video card such as the nvidia 330 or 250 minimum. 17-18" screen and a BlueRay reader would be nice. I was planning on going as high as $1600 if I had to. -
The current best screens on 16+" are on the Dell Precision M6500 and HP Elitebook 8740w. They both use the same 8-bit RGBLED TN panels.
-
doesn't sony also have laptop with RGBLED pannels? BTW if its out of his budget then he has no choice but to settle with normal LED pannels... could i also suggest a Sager or Clevo NP8690... if u got slightly more cash , u can get a D900F which has a core i7 desktop procesor... would be great for ur uses but don't know about the LCD... another alternative is to buy a normal laptop with a allright screen and connect to an external one...
-
Most if not all new laptops have LED screens. There might be a few old models that haven't been refreshed still trudging along with CFLs
-
Actually TN panels make terrible panels for photo editing. Their color and contrast are not uniform across the screen. I did a huge amount of reading and investigation before I bought my destop screen for photo editing. The PVA panels as in the panels used by Samsung in their pro series monitors use the PVA panes. IPS panels are good to. Here's a link to a good explanation:
http://www.pchardwarehelp.com/guides/lcd-panel-types.php
...........so I guess it begs to question if any notebooks are using the PVA or IPS panel technology? -
No, as I stated in your other thread, 99% of notebooks use TN panels (100% of notebooks bigger than 13" are TN panels, most are 6-bit though). And please, use the edit button on the bottom of your message to append, instead of multiple posts.

I hate people who continually multi post.... and people know what I do to people I hate....
*Cue dramatic music*
So use the edit button, mkkkkkkkkkaaaayyyyyyy?
Oh, and the x200s screen is puuuuuuuuurdy. (As in blows away all my other computers) -
It's not a multipost. This post was about LCDs or non-LCD's. The other one I posted is asking about PVA and IPS panels. Different subjects.
-
A multipost is where you have two (Or more) posts right after each other in the same thread. It does not matter what topic they are on, since thats why we have paragraphs.
Now, back on topic please. -
My brother in law just picked up an HP G71 with the LED screen for $550.
-
It's too bad they don't come in 16:9 yet. That's one upgrade I give an arm to have. Still, I can always add one as a second monitor which is also a necessary part of any photographer/videographers arsenal.

I know right!! I know there is a thread about the haters of 16:9... But I have to say that I love 16:9. I can't stand the 4:3 ratios anymore. I like to be able to snap a window to each side of the monitor and not have the windows looking like something out of a Coneheads movie, where the windows are like 2in wide but like 13in tall.. I know thats out of proportion, but that's just what it seems like after using a widescreen monitor for a while. High RES RGBLED 16:9 FTW!!! -
16:10 says Hai.
-
H.A.L. 9000 Occam's Chainsaw
LOL. That ratio can work too.
That's what my MacBook Pro is..

<3 1640 just wish battery was as good as macbooks
