    2.5 GB dual-channel (one 2GB and one 512MB)

Or just a simple 2gGB one?

2.5 GB wont run in Dual-Channel. You'll need two of the same sticks in order to do that. So either you'll run 2.5 GB non Dual-Channel (2GB + 512MB) or 2 GB Duacl-Channel (1GB + 1GB).

I would go with 2.5GB as more RAM seems to be better than the rather small performance increase of Dual-Channel provides.

How desperately do you need the 512GB extra RAM? If its not too urgent I would stick with the 2GB for now, and later invest in another of the same stick for dual-channel performance.

its just that I have 2 512 sticks, so I would replace one with a 2GB stick.
One question though, which is better: single channel, or dual channel.

I think the 2gb + 512mb stick is a smarter move (i wish i had done it). Speed wise it will be the same, but when it comes time for you to want to upgrade to 4gbs, you only have to replace 1 stick instead of 2.

1 2GB stick vs 1 2GB + 1 512MB you want the 2.5GB as there will be no downside. You have more RAM and the 1st 1GB might run in true "Dual Channel"
