Hi
I just wanted an opinion on which of the following is the best ssd:
Patriot PE128GS25SSDR Warp 128GB
--or--
OCZ Core Series OCZSSD2-1C128G
--or--
Apple MBP's 128GB ssd
Will there be major advancements in this field over the next couple of month? I know SSD is a new industry and progress will be fast, but I'd rather not think "darn, I should have wait 3 more weeks to get that". Many thanks

none
SLC FTW, 64GB but nice SSD -
Only MLC SSDs are new. SLC SSDs have been around for at least a decade. That's why SLC SSDs are a proven technology. The only decent MLC SSD is Intel's X25-M. Else stick with SLC from either Samsung (same drives are found in the OCZ/G. Skill SLC - not the OCZ Core series) or Mtron, Memoright, etc.
-
All 3 are bad. Only Intel X25-M is good. Or buy SLC.
-
You should also look at OCZ Core Version 2.
-
Core 2 has the same problems. Core 3 supposedly has a different controller though.
-
Most MLC useless because of faulty controllers. All budget SSDs use JMicron controllers that cause data corruption, and seize under load. If you want an SSD, you should get an SLC SSD, or an Intel MLC SSD which doesn't have the JMicron controller.
-
Thanks for all the suggestions. I'd prefer to buy it in Canada - either online or in person - so my choices are limited.... Out of those 3, which is the best one? or would it just be better to get a 7200rpm 320GB hdd instead?
-
Between SSD or mechanical HDD.
What do you preffer? Storage or a responsive system?
I'd say get a 320GB 7200rpm HDD if you even hesitate to buy a SSD. -
Between those 3 options, I wouldn't choose any. Go for the 320GB 7200 RPM drive. Maybe by the time Windows 7 comes out, we'll have a lot better MLC SSDs. Til then, skip!

The supertalent 128 gb SSD that I have in my T400 is pretty good. It reads at 145 MB/s and writes at about 65 MB/s.
-
Has anyone had similar results with you, jedisolo? So far it seems you're the only lucky person who has a perfectly fine Super Talent. I'm sure there are others but it seems that you are in the minority.

anyone else care to comment?....

I'm having great luck with my Patriot (see sig).

I got the Super Talent 64GB MasterDrive LX for $169 from NewEgg. never had any problems so far. I am using it on a Sony Notebook for general development work, watching TV on Media center, surfing etc. Never stutters. Gives 100MBPs read and around 30Mbps write MAX.
I am not sure why people here are complaining about MLC SSDs. I know OCZ is crap. But not all MLCs are bad. Dont expect too much from a $150 device which gives you 0.4ms access time (compare that to 14ms on my 3.5" 7200 RPM HDD)
Buy from NewEgg, if you dont like the results RMA for a 7200 HDD.
Good Luck -

the fun thing is, nobody ever said something bad about supertalent, and they're very cheap. yet noone wants to buy them somehow..
i'm thinking of getting a supertalent 120gb for my homeserver systemdrive.. we'll see. -
-
The 128 GB that I bought is cheaper than the 120 GB one. The supertalent drives are designed and made in the USA. -
jedisolo,
what kind of battery life do you get with both ssds in your laptop with the dedicated video card? Do you ever witch to the integrated video card and if you can what battery life do you get with both ssds? And with what battery (6 cell?)?
Thanks
I ask bc I plan on purchasing a t400 and putting in a Samsung slc for boot and operating system and a patriot warp v2 in the ultra bay II as storage -
According to Les, you can easily get 30 min more, if not an hour, on the Samsung SLC drive.
-
I don't know because I haven't used if off of the mains for no more than an hour.
which SSD?
