I want an SSD either for just my OS (Windows 7) or maybe a 256GB for OS and also data. Can anyone please recommend a small SSD just for OS and program files, perhaps 60GB? and recommend a suitable 256GB SSD.

    Thanks.

How heavy is your usage? what do you do with your computer?

What are you priorities; the cheapest, the fastest or the most reliable?

What notebook is it for? how important is a battery life improvement to you?

You have to give us better than that for us to recommend you a good SSD..but IMHO you're better off getting an OS drive like 60GB or even a 40GB..But if you play games or use a number of large apps at a given time, I'd recommend you get the cheapest 120GB..256GB is too expensive IMO..It's a lot better to keep your files (movies, music, etc) in an external hard drive..We would also like to know if the system supports SATA 3 or SATA 2..

Quick overview of the more popular choices:
    1. Intel x25-M G2 - tried and tested to be reliable (all other drives have equal reliability, which isn't as proven as intel)
    2. Non-OCZ sandforce drives - said to be one of the "faster" drives in the market, there are claims that performance "degrade" over time or some just suddenly die without warning..
    3. OCZ Vertex 2 - arguably the "fastest" drive in SATA 2, back when it was 34nm..Now OCZ is having problems..Look into it if interested.
    4. Crucial C300 - great drive at SATA 3, used to be the best choice at SATA 3..Works okay at SATA 2 as well..

There are newer drives that we're recently released, the reliability of these drives cannot be determined as they are all new..IMO, I'd stick with the tried and tested ones though..

All data is arguable, this is by no means 100% accurate, but that's the basic idea..Read other threads here for more info..

    Cheers.. :)

Thanks for your replies so far. I don't play games on my laptop (or if I do it's hardly ever). My machine is on all the time. Usual office apps / web browsing / VMWare for VM's of 2008 server Exchange etc.

    Crucial C300 (64GB or 256GB) has the best price/performance.

OCZ Vertex 3 (240GB) is the fastest.

Intel X25m (SATA II) is probably the most reliable choice.

With your uses, I'd go with intel..If you don't play games often or copy many files, I'd say go with the intel as I'm guessing reliability is most important to you since you keep your laptop on for long periods of time..You have 2 drive bays so I recommend grabbing a 40/60/80GB SSD and grabe a WD Scorpio black 750GB for your other drive so you have the best of both worlds..You have a SATA 3 port so it's up to you if you wanna go for the newer intel 510..You have to read reviews on this though, and it is new so we can't say if the drive is as reliable as it's x25-m G2 SATA 2 older brother..You can go for the x25-m G2 if you want a tried and tested reliable drive..It will be SATA 2 but for your uses, you won't notice much difference with other drives..

    Cheers.. :)
