    Hi folks,

I just ordered the Eurocom M5 Pro (I'm in Quebec, Canada) and I'd like to add an SSD to it.

I understand reading the recent discussions that the M.2 SSDs are currently a dangerous option.
Therefore I decided to look for a 7mm SATA SSD. It should fit in the storage space along with the 1TB 7mm HDD already in there.

The HDD should already provide plenty of storage space, so the SSD focus should be on the speed (OS reactivity and Games).
Would you recommend a 256 or a 512 GB one? I wanted to spend around 100$ at first but if there are strong arguments for the 512GB, I could raise my budget.
Which model/brand should I go for?

    Thanks! :)

    Hey There Glude,

In case you're curious, we use Crucial and Samsung 850/840 EVO as the SSD's of choice for Eurocom products. Hope that helps!

As for size, I'd argue a larger size, regardless of where you get it from, because it means you're not looking at upgrading down the line. Spend a bit more upfront for a longer term solution.

I would suggest the 480GB Sandisk Extreme Pro which IMO is one the best SSD's around.. The 840 Evo is a TLC SSD and is proven to be junk in the long term so stay away from it.. Get the 850 only if it's cheaper then the Sandisk... If your'e on a budget the 512GB Crucial MX100 is the way to go..

    Thanks!
it seems the Samsung 850 Evo are significantly more expensive than the Crucial mx100 (200$ vs 280$).
For the ~500 GB version the speeds are about the same for both.
Regarding the ~250 GB version, the Crucial has quite lower Write speeds but from what I see the Read speed is about the same for both.

Is write speed that important for reactivity? What would it be most beneficial for?
Other than this, are there other major differences between the two?

If you could come up with the funds, I'd also recommend getting a 480/500/512GB drive.

It's tough to comparison shop from a different country, but presuming the size above (1/2 TB), NewEgg has MX100 for $190, M550 for $220 and 850 EVO for $250.

Personally, depending on the budget/needs, my pick would be one of the Crucials if I were shopping in this price range.

If you really, truly, irrevocably *must* buy a Samsung drive, 850 Pro or even 840 Pro are the way to go...but they sit on the more expensive side of the fence.

    My $0.02 only...

Thank you all for your wise comments, I bought the Crucial MX100 512GB for 199 $CAD, the best quality/price ratio I could find.

Yeah it's a decent SSD.. I don't know how much a Sandisk Extreme II might have been in canada but it would be a better choice if the others were out of budget..

Have you bought the SSD already?
if not then,i would recommend Sandisk Ultra II,it has excellent read/write speeds, even the random read/write IOPS are very good, and is priced same as the rest.
    OR.......
As the NP8651 has two M.2 slots, one Sata controlled and another Pcie X4 controlled,i would use the Sata M.2 slot and install Transcend MTS800
this allows for a little cooler operation of the HDD and very little power saving compared to SSD. As the SSD's are already very power efficient

The transcend is slower and costly,as it is Sata based and is very new[M.2 Scoket] in market

And when the Pcie X4 based SSD's become cheaper, buy a 500GB model.Although they have insane read/write speeds, their Random IOPS have failed to improve that much.So you will not see that much difference from a regular SSD.

Sandisk Ultra II : http://www.amazon.com/SanDisk-Ultra-Solid-State-Drive/dp/B00M8ABEIM/ref=sr_1_7?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1422972135&sr=1-7&keywords=7mm ssd

    Transcend MTS800 : http://www.amazon.com/Transcend-MTS...ie=UTF8&qid=1422972096&sr=1-3&keywords=MTS800

    Transcend MTS600 : http://www.amazon.com/Transcend-256...ie=UTF8&qid=1422973585&sr=1-1&keywords=MTS600

From what i know, the only difference is the length (80mm vs 60mm)but i might be wrong, and strangely the MTS800 is a little costly.

And i have recently bought the NP8651 :) :) and i would like to know your thoughts on this laptop both good and bad(if any) :D

Edit:You cant have both HDD and SSD (9mm+7mm) in P650SE,but both 7mm
and i am not sure if the default HDD is 7mm or 9m,.i think it is 9mm
    The P650SG version allows for a 9mm+7mm i think

In the end I got a 1TB Samsung 850 EVO, as MySN, who I've since bought my XMG P505/P651SE from), were doing a very good price on this as part of the initial machine configuration

Let us know how the 850 EVO performs - especially compared to any other SSD you have had daily/real world use of. Ty.

I'll try! BTW the 1TB model has a different controller (3 core MEX, rather than 2 core MGX) controller from the smaller sizes, so may perform a little better - I think it's the same controller as is used in the 850 Pro
