Im getting my P150HM Friday so i need to decide which SSD im going to use.
I actually ordered it with a Momentus XT 750GB (the new SATA III hybrid), since it only ran me 79€ as an upgrade from the stock 320GB HD at that time (got lucky, its a 129€ upgrade now :D). I also have at home a Liteon M2S 256GB.
Now i can keep one of these (i did order a caddy too, but i still intend to use the optical drive for now so it will be the only drive in the laptop) and use it, or sell them and buy something else. I was looking at the Crucial M4 256GB, Samsung 830 256GB or maby Intel 510 250GB (if its worth an extra 150€ over the other SSDs).
In the EU i can get all of these (except the Intel 510) for a very similar price. As i read sandforce is pretty unreliable right now so i didnt look at any of those. I loved the X25-M and X25-M G2 i owned, they were fast and reliable, but i need something new now (preferably even faster and as reliable).
I need a good fast and reliable drive. If the drive has something like the Intel SSD Toolbox to do a manual trim of the drive to restore it to full speed whenever you need thats also a plus (i didnt find anything like it for the other drives but Intel). So considering all this, which one would you choose/recommend?

My recommendation would be the Samsung 830.

Decently priced, reliable and also has a software utility contrarily to the M4. Slightly faster than the M4 too IIRC. If you do have the cash to drop on the Intel, you get the toolbox, a more reliable drive and a 5 years warranty.

What exactly does the utility offer? Some sort of manual trim to restore performance like the toolbox?

I just did a quick check, to make sure and the answer is yep although you shouldn't need it unless you go nuts with the writes. The utility will also allow you to update create a bootable USB to update the firmware as well as provide some benchmarking tools.

I just installed samsung 830 128gb ssd in my P150HM, easy and fast.
It comes with a batman: arkham city game free download code.

Haven't tried the magician software. Don't think I need manual trim.

Id take the Intel if only it wasnt that expensive... I was very happy with their previous gens. Ill thoroughly check the prices and see which i can get cheapest maby. As i read though the Plextor M2S i got uses the same Marvell controller as the Intel 510 and the M4... So shouldnt these be very similar in reliability?

I'm perfectly happy with my fleet of inexpensive, outdated SATA 2 SSDs. I've paid ~$1/gb for all of them and I don't really care about high benchmark scores, as long as the real-life performance is there. I've found the seat-of-the-pants performance of all my drives to be about the same so far.

Personally I'd go with an Intel or Samsung drive, as it's been consistently shown that they're at the top for reliability. For SSDs, I'd put reliability above speed: I want my SSDs to keep my data and not give me a moment's doubt that my data may be in jeopardy. I use an Intel X25-M G2 80GB and a Samsung 470 64GB.

The Intel 320 series and Samsung 830 series have occasionally been selling for very low prices (the former at even below $1/GB), so they're affordable choices as well.

Exactly my thoughts. So you wouldnt put the M4 or M2S with the prooven reliable bunch?

I've seen one or two comments about the 256GB version having problems on NBR. The general consensus however is that the M4 is still in the top tier for reliability, but not quite at the same level as Intel. Both my 64GB and 128gb M4s are behaving nicely so far.

I would go with Samsung or Crucial.
By default a Intel SSD 510 wont play nice with Intel Rapid Storage Manager, so you got to do a regedit to disable LPM.

If i could have choosen again i would have a Crucial M4 drive in my Clevo P170HMx instead of the Intel SSD 510 120gb i got now.
I got a M4 drive with 64gb on my server for OS and its been running stable for at least 3 weeks without restarts.

I installed a Samsung 830 in my SATA II laptop and I haven't had a single issue with it since December 1st; I could do a few screenshots of the benchmarking tool, but it gives a automatic firmware updater, Over-provisioning tool, Secure erase, disk clone (haven't used it) and OS Optimization (which disabled and enables a few things in Windows easily.

The Samsung is also thin, if that matters at all.

How much thinner is the Samsung? Do i need some sort of a special bracket to make it fit into the laptop?

I've seen a few problem reports for the M4, but overall it would seem it's quite reliable as well. It was enough to turn me away, but it still seems like a pretty good choice, especially if you can land a good deal on one.

It's 7mm in height, as opposed to the general standard of 9.5mm for laptop 2.5" drives (the 7mm height makes it useful to fit in certain laptops such as the X220 and T420s, though). The retail packaging (not sure about OEM packaging) of the Samsung 830 series includes a spacer that can be attached to the top of the SSD, making it 9.5mm in height.

Basically, height should be a nonconcern here.

Thanks for all the info, i think ill take either the Samsung or M4 then depending on price and availability. If i manage to sell everything soon i might even go for 512GB.
