I want my ExpressCard slot back. Asus needs to think clearly.

Those are all driver issues, not performance issues, and they can be fixed. Will they be fixed? Well, maybe some of them if we're lucky, but problems will still persist because Intel is just lazy with drivers. Regardless, to say that the 4250 beats it is still flat out wrong, since not being not able to play games smoothly is far worse than graphical glitches in some games, at least imo. The 4250 doesn't come close to beating HD Graphics 3000; it just has better driver support.
-
Looks like cooling with be a major issue with the turbo frequencies so any notebook with proven separate CPU/GPU cooling. So Alienware and Asus G series for now.
-
davepermen Notebook Nobel Laureate
why should it be a major issue? the cooling has to deliver 100% full heat discipation anyways. was always the case, and stays the case.
actually, with the new cpus, cooling will be more simple, as they can determine their temperature and balance themselves. -
Dude. relax.
Id like to see if an hp pavilion will get the same turbo frequency during prolonged stress compared to an asus G53/73.
before you say anything...........Im sure what i just said is a lie, stupid or both. so no need to say it again. -
IIRC, the AnandTech review of SB said that the 2720qm looked to offer 95% of the performance of the 2820qm for about 2/3 of the price.
-
Karamazovmm Overthinking? Always!
Im looking forward for the refresh in the envy line or the asus U41 to get some SB goodness and an old gt 540m
-
Wait! Hold on a second! Does this mean I can finally have performance in a mobile computer (Video editing and high end gaming) that has more than 2 hours of battery life?
Wow! -
The Sony Vaio Z with Sandy Bridge.
This is what I'll get:
13.1" 1920x1080 Screen
Sandy Bridge Processor
4 GBs of RAM
256 GBs (4x64 GBs) SSD
ATI Mobility Radeon 66xx/67xx Series + Intel GMA HD Manually Switchable
7 Hours Realistic Battery life with power saver mode and 6-cell battery
SOOOOO EXCITED
-
Toshiba Qosmio already has Sandy Bridge versions for sale at Sears.
-
No, you'll probably still get 2-3 hours of battery life with those tasks. Anandtech tested their system with integrated graphics and an extended 71WHr battery. If you full throttle the CPU and a high end discrete GPU for gaming, you'll easily half the time they obtained.
-
I don't think he meant while doing those tasks. Or, at least I hope he didn't.
-
how would you full throttle the CPU ? Interested for my 740qm.
Panther214 -
Price? A mint?
-
Well, what if the laptop was capable of those tasks but on battery you were just doing some simple document writing and excel spreadsheets. Are we looking at a powerhouse with an acceptable battery life?
-
Yes we are. That to me is the major breakthrough. Or it was already happening in the prior two generation but getting much better in SB and is going to be scary in Ivy and its follow ups.
May be there is a reason why Intel sold their XScale after all. They must know that they have things up their sleeves to counter ARM. -
Any 17" Clevo w/ the 6970M.
-
i'm with u on that one bro...around 1 large, good-very nice graphics, around 15 inches, i'll be set...
i've never had a performance laptop so this is very exciting... -
Tsunade_Hime such bacon. wow
13.1" with 1080p, ATI and Intel IGP switchable GPU...dream on!
-
LOLWUT? Nice. Guess I never figured to check Sears for the latest tech. Thanks for that +1!!!
Here it is:
$1599 X505-Q8102
http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_12605_00319489000P
i7-2630QM (2.0 - 2.9GHz)
6GB DDR3 1333
GTX 460m 1.5GB
640GB 7200RPM
18.4" (wow) 1080p (TFT - blech)
And other ones they should have:
http://www.cpu-world.com/news_2011/2011010202_Sears_adds_Toshiba_laptops_with_Sandy_Bridge_CPUs.html -
Their 18.4" could do for an update and a facelift.
-
Indeed. This is where this class of notebook lags.
-
Jayayess1190 Waiting on Intel Cannonlake
No need, the Vaio Z replacement will have most of that. -
But with a price that'll make you feel that you've been kicked very very very hard in the pistachios.
-

Nothing Z owners aren't already used to.

Yeah and Sony screwing them over badly! Yay!
13.1" with 1080p display? Notify me when pigs start flying...maybe 1600x900p for 13.1" -
Errrr......Do I get rep for kicking a deities ar*e?
Sony Vaio Z sports world's first 1080p 13.1-inch display - Notebooks - Crave - CNET Asia -
Tsunade_Hime such bacon. wow
Available from Asia for 3300 plus shipping or 4500 here...no thanks. Plus it's a Sony product, it's bound to be horrible. -
But it is available......now now, be good, eat a little crow.
I said in my earlier posting that Sony would be crazy priced but 1080p has been available on the 13" Z Series since early this year.
Sony always were early with high resolution screens, I remember the early picturebooks that had 1280x600 in a 7" format.
I'd never buy Sony because their aftersales is perhaps the worst I've ever experienced. However I have to admit a 13" unit with 1080p and an inbuilt Blu Ray would be a very tempting proposition. -
Tsunade_Hime such bacon. wow
That isn't the worst part about Sony. They have shown again and again, they will discontinue parts after stuff is OOW very quickly. ASP support is the absolute worst. In fact for about 2 months, nobody in America could order Sony parts under warranty, their SAP/SPAN parts ordering system was down. You had to ship to Sony for warranty repair, even for a defective hard drive or AC Adapter.
-
actually its only a $100 upgrade from the default 1600x900 if you get the configurable model which starts at $1899. You can get a refurbished Z with 1080p as low as $1300 as of right now
-
Prices vary a lot from country to country, just because you can find some deals where you're from, doesn't mean everyone can get it at that price.
-
without being able to see it on the configurator I can't be sure, but the sony vaio SA might be just the thing for me. just announced it will replace the Z series -- huge extra battery option, SB processor, 6630M gpu, manual gpu toggle (no optimus, etc), 13" 1600x900 LED backlit, starting at $!250
the GPU is one of my main concerns .. a 6630M is supposed to be worse than a 425M nvidia .. and that would kinda suck -
How could that possibly be the case if it's higher than the 6570M? I'm calling bull on whatever source gave you that info.
-
The 6630M will definitely be better than the 425M if it has GDDR5. If it has GDDR3 or DDR3, then it will be a lot closer, but probably still pull ahead.
-
The Sandy Bridge processors showed up on the PassMark site already. Currently 1 sample each for the SB type (as of this minute
).
PassMark - CPU Benchmarks - List of Benchmarked CPUs
Intel Core i5 430M @ 2.27GHz (Arr.), score = 2356
Intel Core i5-2410M @ 2.30GHz (SB.), score = 3028 = 1.285x
Intel Core i5 460M @ 2.53GHz (Arr.), score = 2589
Intel Core i5-2540M @ 2.60GHz (SB), score = 3039 = 1.174x
Hmm..... either the score for the SB 2410 is too high or the SB 2540 is too low!? -
tilleroftheearth Wisdom listens quietly...
Yeah, don't trust passmark too much.
-
Karamazovmm Overthinking? Always!
The sony vaio SA might be one the best of this year, if that is the price I will definitely get one.
And the 6550 is the rebranded 5650, which is more powerful than the 425m, now if you get a 6630 which is a new arch than you are probably going for something good, looking at the improvement of the 6970 the 6000 series might not be such a downer, of course there is a clear limit to compare the cards across an entire line. -
The tough part of this anticipation is that plenty more announcements of "mid-level" models will come in February or March. The manufacturers will always roll out the big boys first to lure enthusiasts then trickle in more mainstream models.
-
Tsunade_Hime such bacon. wow
By lure you mean make more money. Manufacturers hardly make a profit on the cheapo 299-399 notebooks. -
Mid-level to me means the $500-$800 units with dual cores. Most announcements right now are for quad core systems.
-
Tsunade_Hime such bacon. wow
But that's what I'm saying. Mid range they make more money than lowest end stuff. And up the chain you go, the more $$$ for companies. And that's the reason early adopters get burned by buying brand brand new technology. -
I misread it thank god
.. its the 435M it is worse than. Pretty reputable source, when they aren't being misquoted (haha! my bad)
Comparison of Laptop Graphics Cards - Notebookcheck.net Tech
They call it "Successor of the slow clocked (low power) versions of the Mobility Radeon HD 5650 with more cores, UVD3 processor and Eyefinity+." and place it between the 5650 and the 6550. It's certainly a far cry from a 460M/mainstream gaming gpu from H2-2010.
Unlike the Z the price varies ... a lot. It is also supposed to replace the Y and the other tiny laptop in that group. The version with SSDs starts at $!900 -- which looks to be the version more directly replacing the Z. -

But aren't you supposed to make more money on a more expensive product?
10% of $1.00 is 10 cents
10% of $10.00 is $1.00
And we need to thank early adpoters. I was trying to convince someone that buying a 3D TV now is a bad purchase. Limited 3D content, TV + Glasses + 3D Player = $$$ and the technology needs some refining (uncomfortable glasses, crosstalk, etc). Then I watched Alice in Wonderland 3D and was blown away. If people did not spend money to be the first, companies would not get the revenue to refine the technology and pay for some of that R&D.
If everyone skipped Sandy Bridge and waited we probably would not see Ivy Bridge. Guinea pigs of this world I thank you! -
But at least you can say you're getting something from it. Can you says the same about a Mac?Nowadays netbooks can approach $500. Therefore, a mid-level machine is more like $800-$1000. A thousand or more begins the upper levels.
-
Question about that laptop:
Why does it say GTX 500 series? There havent been any official release of them has it?Last edited by a moderator: May 6, 2015 -
Maybe MSI was blindsided like everyone else?
