question for you memory experts... what would be faster?

    1GB PC2-4200 DDR2-533MHz 200-Pin SoDIMM CL 4

    or

    1GB PC2-3200 DDR2-400MHz 200-Pin SoDIMM CL 2.5
    ??

im concerned that the cas latency or 4 would make it slower than the PC-3200 with CL of 2.5 or 3. btw... im buying it for a vaio tx-series which has a 400MHz FSB. thanks.

I don't think either will make a difference, since your laptop will automatically clock the 533mhz down to 400mhz...

You need to make sure your notebook can handle a CAS of 2.5. I remember a user in the Acer section that upgraded his ram himself, but used a module with a CAS that was not compatible. This made the system react badly (possibly no boot). After replacing the module with the same problem, he replaced it with a different CAS, it worked fine.

Goto Kingston.com or Crucial.com and find a module that is compatible with your unit and get that. This way, you'll know it works.

ok... in that case the cl2.5 would be faster. what if the FSB was 533MHz? which would perform faster then?

both of those websites and mushkin say 1GB PC2-4200 DDR2-533MHz 200-Pin SoDIMM CL 4 is compatible. sony recommends the PC2-3200. i suppose what im not sure of is how the CL timing will affect its performance.

the latency issue is overblown. the difference is in the 5% or less range.
