    Hi guys,

I have an Asus W7J. I love the laptop but the speakers are somewhat weak. I'm about to go on xmas vacation and was thinking of picking up either the:

    Logitech V20
    Altec XT1

Are there any better choices out there? Which ones should I go for?

    Thanks!

Also consider the JBL On Tour and the various Creative models. The JBL On Tour is a bit heavier and more expensive but has excellent audio quality. I am using the Creative TravelDock 900 which I found at a good price (I didn't want and don't use the docking facility)and has the advantage of a 5V input which one of my other USB power cables fits. The JBL has its own power adaptor.

    Hope this helps,

    John

given the choice between the two listed....I'd choose the V20's....more power, less cost.

I have the V20's and personally I love 'em. I didn't bother getting another set of speakers for home since I think they are good enough for me.

I would suggest the JBL as well, just because the Logitech and Altec Lansing have tinnier sound quality. Of course, it depends on the kind of music you listen to.

If you are willing to use non-USB speakers, then I would easily suggest Klipsch speakers (2.1) for midrange, and acoustic sensibilities - but I would recommend Bose Companion 2 for high tones, bass and movies.

I purchased the Altec Lansing XT2 3 weeks ago for a presentation and was impressed of their sound quality and sound level for USB powered speakers.

I had purchased them locally where I was giving my presentation to 5 people (My notebook built in speaker are probably the worst ever, can't even hear them beside 2 people carrying a normal conversation). I had the intent of returning them after my presentation but was so surprised that I decided that those are keepers.

They also cant be powered with a supplied external Ac Adapter to increase the power levels. These speakers lacks the punch of a subwoofer but their sound quality is very good.

PRO: Lightweight, very portable. Very well thought out connecting wire from the left speaker is retractable inside the left speaker. Very easy to setup on WinXP, no external drivers required. Come with a very nice compact transport case (10 inches Long X 8 inches Wide X 2 inches thick) Each speakers measures 7.4" H X 2.2" W X 1.4"D. Frequency Response is 100Hz to 20Khz. Power Output (USB Powered from Notebook) 1.6 Watts RMS Total (0.8 Watt RMS per speaker). AC powered with the supplied adapter 4 Watts RMS Total (2.0 Watts RMS per speaker)

The AC Adapter comes with interchangeable International Plug set and can be powered with voltages from 100 Volts AC to 240 Volts AC.

CONS: Lack bass but what can you really expect from such small speakers.

Don't get me wrong, if you want the best sound you will have to sacrifice portability or get a good pair of head or ear phones if the sound is just for your pleasure. A good $75.00 headphone or earphone is going to sound as good if not better then $500 speaker sets.

    Best regards

I would say the Creative Labs. They are usually cheaper and better quality then most maufactures that I have seen. I use my internal speaker because they are pertty good, but I also use a Creative TravelSound 300 speakers, they are like $40 and have really good sound quality, that and they are indestructible. I have only known one thing that was Creative to break, and that was a subwoofer that fell out of a 3 floor window, but that would kill just about anything.

I use the Logitech v20. Nice sound, nice bass. A little trouble with the directional stuff though, like in counterstrike sometimes you can't tell if a guy is in "front and to the right" of you or in "back and to the right".

Thanks guys for the replies. I have a pair of GREAT headphone speakers (SHURE) but I wanted to pick up some regular speakers when we have parties in the hotel.
