I am looking to upgrade my laptop's Hitachi 5400rpm to one of the 4 following drives all with 8m cache:

    1) WD5000BEVT 500GB ($70)
    2) WD5000BPVT 500GB ($65)
    3) WD3200BEVT 320GB ($60)
    4) WD3200BPVT 320GB ($55)

Are the larger 500GB ones faster than the 300GB ones in real life? What's the difference between BPVT and BEVT?

Thanks a lot in advance! :)

The BEVT is the traditional Scorpio Blue. The BPVT is the advanced format drives. Traditional hard drives use 512 byte blocks while advanced format uses 4k blocks.

I have a 500 GB BEVT and a 640 GB BEVT and both are quiet and cool. Perform isn't that much worse than a Scorpio Black. I also recently got a 750 GB Scorpio black for my 2nd Z61t.

    Thanks for the quick reply.

Apparently BPVT is slightly better but is the 300GB version a bit slower than the 500GB or storage space has nothing to do with speed?

    Thanks again!

Can the new 4KB drives be used with XP-Pro, W7 and Linux?
Is there a jumper to set or software to use for older OS's?
    Thanks

U can use a advanced format drive in XP, but you need to install software or something to get optimal performance. Win7 is ready for Advanced format drives.
