    The WD7500BPKT, WD5000BEKT, WD3200BEKT, WD2500BEKT all feature dual-platters. Only the WD1600BEKT is a single-platter drive.

Afaik, Hitachi is the only company to have developed a 2.5'' 500GB drive with a single-platter. We'd have to see how long it takes Hitachi's IT to dissolve into WD's.

Are they selling that? which one is it?

I do know the Z7K320 is available with a single 320GB platter.

    I found it at Storagereview.

Note: I said "developed" :(. So it'll still be some time until it the Z5K500 will go retail.

This is the 7mm drive, so I would expect a 9.5mm platter to be right around the same time. Although, with the buyout of Hitachi by WD, this will probably mean the drives will be delayed. /Sigh

Is it safe to say that 9.5mm (and smaller) drives are single-platter, 12mm are dual platter or ????

    I really don't know.

9.5mm drives can be single or dual platter.

2.5" 7mm drives can only be single platter as far as I know.

This topic begs the question that with the advent of larger capacity (higher density) platters in hard drives, are there risks associated with packing more GB per single platter than utilizing a multi-platter design with less GB per platter to mitigate potential problems?

I want to say that I recall reading an article in CPU Magazine awhile back that addressed the issue of large density platters encountering problems due to single platter designs, but for the life of me, I can't locate the article.

Please pardon my ignorance--what's the significance of single-disc vs. dual-disc HD's? I imagine the single-disc HD's have faster access times, but is the difference significant?

    Thanks,

The performance difference is not really significant. The noise and vibration difference can be significant, especially in light notebooks.

I think these could be triple platter too.
AFAIK Samsung had some drives having triple platters in standard-height drives.

I thought triple platter hard drives are 12mm.
