I'm trying to decide on an external HD for an enclosure and I'm having trouble deciding between a Seagate, WD, and Hitachi. I've owned a Maxtor which failed after about 2.5 years and a Seagate in my old desktop which has been running for about 2 years with no problems. My current notebook HD is a seagate which may have some issues: see discussion http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=268066

So which brand HDD do you prefer: Seagate, Western Digital, Hitachi, Samsung, Toshiba, Maxtor....?

Any brand fails sometimes. Get one with good warranty and support.

I know WD has excellent support here in the netherlands. Don't know about US situation.

Go for Hitachi or samsung, I have never had any problems with them. I have had major problems with WD a few years back.
I have one seagate laptop drive and it is good, but the hitachi with the same rpm and capacity is faster.
Dont get Maxtor or Excelstor, they have very low quality check, and release many faulty drives.

My brother had bought a refurbished desktop about 4 yrs ago. It had a refurb'ed hitachi in it. The drive failed within two weeks. He rma'ed it through hitachi, and got a brand new harddrive in the mail about 2 weeks later. It was very nice, and the drive works fine to this day.
My bro has also bought three seagate desktop drives within the past two years. One of them was a 320gb 7200rpm drive which he rma'ed 3 times, within 2 months. The other was a 500gb 7200rpm drive which he rma'ed 9 times within the last year. My brother finally realized that every time he rma's it costs money, so he stopped bothering, since seagate only returned a refurbished drive, which most of teh time didnt work at first use.
My bro just upgraded to Hitachi and has no problems.
I dont use WD anymore cause of bad past experiences.

IDK, I've had a WD Scorpio 5400RPM and it ran super hot in my DV9000. Seagate seems to work the best for me in terms of speed and heat output.

Used to be a Seagate fan but they are letting me down these days. I am now using Western Digital in my laptop and desktop.
