I am trying to figure out which brands use MXM cards.

I know the following are using MXM cards:
    Acer
    Clevo
    Alienware
    Compal
    MSI
Asus (I don't know if the new MXM 3.0 models are also modified, the previous MXM 2.1 were modified MXM cards).

    Anything else?

I thought ASUS used a proprietary form of MXM and could only be upgraded to another ASUS gpu?

As far as I know, it's basically a reversed MXM connector, the rest is the same. So yes and no :). Technically if they wanted to change to the MXM standard, they could do that at almost no cost, they just don't want to.

As of MXM 3.0 ASUS laptops, I believe they are no longer reversed.

They are still different. I just don't think anyones tried a normal card in one so we cant be sure yet.

    Here are some others:
HP elitebooks, including 8740w, 8540w (i think) and all the older models.
Lenovo W series 17", possibly 15", also a few ideapads
Toshiba uses the connector and probably electrical specification, but the boards are all crazy shapes.

Everyone used MXM once at some point. there are a few old gateway laptops with standard MXM 2.1 III.

Acer doesn't use MXM in their new models.

If they did I would have tried out the Aspire 7552G with the Black Edition Phenom and replaced the Mob. HD5830+.

When was the 7552G released. I know a friend of bought an Acer laptop exactly an year ago and it had MXM 3.0 . The video card was a 240M.

I think generally the last 2 numbers have to be under 40.

someone has used a GTX 260m on the 7738g by desoldering and moving components around to make room for MXM B. The BIOS supports it. As you can see there are a few that already have the space for MXM 3.0 B

I guess then that just some models have MXM cards, but not all of them. Maybe it depends on the ODM.

I'm pretty sure its specifically the older models and they did stop at some point, so there are no i3/i5/i7 models with MXM. could be wrong tho.

BTW I just used your gddr thread lol, keep forgetting its yours. Found a 9800m GS with 1000mhz modules

Not quite. The 8940G is the only core i7 notebook that came with MXM. Its also the only Acer that came with the GTS250M which is why they are around. It also has space for an MXM-B card but the heatsink is very similar to mine I think.

If you could get a GTX460 in there are working it could be a beast. About the only challenge to mine if I get it working.
