I recently bought a Toshiba L45-S7423 for cheap. According to the product specs on Toshiba's website, I have the GL960 chipset. But CPUZ and Intel's Chipset Identifier both say I have the GM965. Which one should I trust?

The reason why I'm so curious is because I'll probably try replacing the CPU as soon as the warranty expires and it looks like the GM965 chipset supports more processors.

    Thanks for the help.

Toshiba. CPU-Z does not always get it right, but most of the time it is accurate.

    What processor do you have?

Unless I missed it, it didn't look like they came up with a definitive answer in that other thread.

Sandra just says PM965/GM965/GL960 so not much help there.

Thanks for the quick responses guys. I hope we can figure this out.

With all the news of GL960 running more than just Celerons, I bet it's all just marketing and all of the members of the 960 series are all just the same chip.

So the GL960 has 800 MHz front side bus support?

Who's rocket man? I found a couple variations of the name but none of them had any post about this chipset.

Am I rocket man for replying so fast? My FSB is 533MHz.

Here is a link to Intel document on 965 chipset family it has GL960 info. It is not the easiest to understand. I think it says it only supports FSB 533Mhz, but also indicates it only supports Celerons. Take a read and see if you can make heads or tails of it. "rocket man" is something my friends and I call each other usually on technical stuff when we are not sure about things. Kind of a tease. I hope you have GM965 as it looks like it supports all features and GL960 does not.

lol. Thanks powerpack. I'm trying to make sense of the PDF you linked to.

Am I correct in saying that if your CPU bus speed is 533MHz, then your memory speed is limited to 533?

If I'm wrong and you can run the memory faster than the bus speed, that would mean I'm stuck with the GL960. CPU-Z shows that my memory supports 667MHz.

    If I'm right, then there's still a chance I have GM965.

    ....or am I way off?

Found this little note on Toshiba sight, might of went ahead and used GM965 because the were on hand.

1 The product specifications and configuration information are designed for
a product Series. Your particular model may not have all the features and
specifications listed or illustrated. For more detailed information about the
features and specifications on your particular model, please visit Toshiba’s
Web site at pcsupport.toshiba.com. Toshiba America Information Systems, Inc.

And even though everything does say DDR II 667Mhz It is not possible for RAM to run faster than FSB. Go to there site and talk to them, why they say 667Mhz when FSB is 533Mhz? How can you tell what chipset you have. If you have more than 2GB of RAM you could put it in and if recognized as more than 2GB not GL960.
