Im not sure where to post this so I think this is the right place.
I am ordering a G51J from xoticpc and have some questions
1.should I get SSD or the other hard drive
2.Do i need extra ram is is the original 4,096MB DDR3 1066MHz Dual Channel Memory (2x2GB) good enough for an avid hardcore gamer
3.Is it safe to overclock intel® Core™ i7-720QM, 1.60-2.80GHz, with the 17 inch cooler and the IC Diamond Thermal Compound - CPU + GPU with out ruining the laptop.
4.Does it run hot without the cooler sold at xoticpc.
    5.How heavy is it
    6.is it loud
7.Would you say it is the best gaming rig for under 1500 USD
8.Is it compatible with the powerpad.
9.how long is the battery (9cell and 6 cell)
10.should I order a custom skin or is the case design it comes with cool enough
11.should I order the backpack that is free, the other back pack or the top-load notebook case because I do some light traveling (mostly to Disney World on Jet Blue)
I am an avid gamer playing extreme and not so extreme games. I am also pretty young.

Thanks in advanced.( this is going to decide my laptop for a couple years)

It's probably enough for now, but next year you may want to upgrade to 8gb since the 4gb sticks should drop in price.

Depends on what temps you get. Try to keep the CPU voltage as low as possible, overclock then undervolt as much as you can.

    1. Go with the SSD.
    2. I would say that 4GB is fine for now. What's the price to upgrade to 8GB? In nearly all cases, it's probably going to be cost prohibitive.
    3. I guess you could overclock the processor, but why? The only thing you'd get from it is a hotter notebook and even worse battery life. But hell, let's face it, you're running a 2.8GHz multi-CPU... there's not much that proc can't handle.
    4. That notebook is going to run hot regardless while playing games. Once the GPU kicks in, you're going to have a toasty lap. What kind of notebook cooler are you looking for? A portable one or one that is stationary (NZXT Cryo LX, Silverstone NB01/NB02 et al). Besides the point, if you overclock your laptop expect to see your system temps skyrocket.
    5. A 17" laptop is going to be heavy, no doubt about it. I can't offer a specific number, but there's a reason why people call 17" laptops 'bricks'.
    6. Again, can't speak to this, but most likely once you start gaming and your GPU kicks in, you can expect your laptop to make some noticeable noise.
    7. Probably not. Where else have your tried to spec out a laptop for $1,500? Is this your budget?
    8. No idea...
    9. Probably not that great. You're buying a gaming laptop which is going to devastate your battery life. Not to mention that if you overclock your processor, you can expect even worse battery performance.
    10. Erm, in my opinion, less is always more. I've never been one for gaudy designs or blinged out notebooks (XPS, Alienware, et al). They simply look ridiculous. Why not opt for a really nice, quality paint job instead?
    11. Backpacks are something that need to be experienced first hand. Fit, form, and function are things that are equally important and cannot be judged by looking at bags online. With that said, I'd encourage you to visit a store that sells laptop bags and try on a few. I always recommend Booq and Timbuk2.

The Asus I am looking at is not a 17 inch notebook it is 15.6 inches. The only reason I askeds about a 17 inch cooler is because xoticpc sells them cheap and the second largest one 15.4 inches which was just too small and it is make of a weak plastic. 1500 usd is my budget. To upgrade ram from the standard 4 GB to 8GB from the site is $537. I am not too worried about heat because I am buying some good thermal tape and a cooler. For those who don't know what the power pad is. It is basically a large battery you can put under your laptop and extends you battery life by A LOT and you can charge your Ipod, phone ect. I was wondering about overclocking because I am getting the cheapest i7core processor but I heard that you could get it faster than the i7-920 XM extreme. Is there anything dangerous about overclock besides heat Also is windows seven supposed to be a good system
    Thanks

If I would overclock and undervolt, use thermal paste (the expensive type from xoticpc) what would you expect the temp be

You can't manually overclock a 720QM. It will OC on it's own due to turbo boost, but the only mobile i7 that we've seen able to be overclocked is that 920XM which allows it in the bios on the W870CU.

Check Ryzeki's Asus G51J-A1 review, you will find a lot of the answers to your questions there, also you can post there as he actually owns it for better opinion from an actual owner.

1.should I get SSD or the other hard drive
I would, i love mine, but i probably will order seperatly as Asus comes pre assemble, so getting the extra drive doent save anything from buying it after and keep the extra 320gb for backups or even if the other one goes down, or even sell it.

2.Do i need extra ram is is the original 4,096MB DDR3 1066MHz Dual Channel Memory (2x2GB) good enough for an avid hardcore gamer
4gb are fine for now, unless you plan to do video encoding or apps that benefit from the extra memory you will not see improvement on games.

3.Is it safe to overclock intel® Core™ i7-720QM, 1.60-2.80GHz, with the 17 inch cooler and the IC Diamond Thermal Compound - CPU + GPU with out ruining the laptop.
Well the i7 Overclocks itself depending on how many cores its using, so i wouldnt touch it unless you really need to. But i would defently go for the ICD7 upgrade.

4.Does it run hot without the cooler sold at xoticpc.
    5.How heavy is it
    6.is it loud
8.Is it compatible with the powerpad.
9.how long is the battery (9cell and 6 cell)

    Check the review above.

7.Would you say it is the best gaming rig for under 1500 USD
I would say is a good package, reasonably priced for what it offers, there are other options that are close like Sagger 8662, but its a matter of preference.

10.should I order a custom skin or is the case design it comes with cool enough
I don't find any value into looks, but if you do feel free to do so, this is like asking what color should i buy my car.

11.should I order the backpack that is free, the other back pack or the top-load notebook case because I do some light traveling (mostly to Disney World on Jet Blue)
I would wait for the backpack to arrive and see if you like it, there are a lot of other after market backpacks/bags that you can buy later if you don't like what it comes with.

    OC = overclock.

You could possibly overclock it. But you would need to use software like setfsb or do a PLL pin mod.

I'm not sure if anyone has tried the BSEL mod on those. Would be interesting to see if it works.

Anyway, those methods arn't safe. You dont need to overclock it anyway, that CPU is good enough for anything. maybe in a year or two you will decide you want to overclock. For now just keep it stock, but undervolted.

There is no fsb on a core i7, so I doubt setfsb or BSEL is going to work. ;)

Ok, but the PLL mod should work.

Also I'm sure there is an equivalent to the BSEL mod. We just need the datasheet.
