Hi ya,
I need some advice on a decent 2.5" HDD external with 500GB.
Am looking for something with both FW & USB.
Ideally it should be easy to disassemble the HDD from the enclosure so that I can fit it into my Macbook (2007 model) in the future.
Thanks,
Eric Teo,

the seagate freeagent portable uses the Samsung HM500LI 2.5" 500gb drive. It is a decent harddrive, but it is not nearly as fast as the new 500gb drive by Western digital.
I al just letting you know it has a Samsung drive in it, because Seagate does not manufacture any 500gb harddrives at the moment for laptops.

just build your own, you'll probably end up saving about 30%

From what I've seen, decent HDD enclosures with FW and SATA drive support tend to range from GBP 80-100 (inc. VAT).
Get a decent HDD such as WD 500 GB, could almost amount upto GBP 180-190 range.
Any ideas as to whether the new metal enclosure Seagate Free Agent Go or WD Passport HDD will fit into the Macbook ?

Do you know which HDD in the Iomega eGo Portable Hard Drive 500GB (USB & FW 400)?
And whether the dimensions will fit into the Macbook ? -
the only 500gb drives which will fit into the macbook are the 9.5mm thick drives. So that means the only drives which will work are the 500gb Western Digital 5400rpm blue drive and the Samsung HM500LI.
The Hitachi 5K500 and the Fujitsu 500gb drive are both 12.5mm thick, and will not fit into your computer.
Your best bet is to go with the freeagent, cause it has the Samsung drive in it.
Other than that, you may want to buy the 500gb wd blue online for a decent price, because it is the faster of the two 500gb drives which will fit into your laptop.
