No, no external hard drives work in Vista. IMO it was a huge oversight on Microsoft's part, but oh well. :p

Just kidding, I've been using my Seagate Freeagent Pro with no issues for almost a year now. eSATA and USB both work fine.
My WD Passport has also had zero problems.
In fact, I think almost all external hard drives will work fine in Vista X64.

MANY Western Digital external HDDs do not work with 64 bit.

I returned my Passport 320gb since it did not work. The WD rep told me some work, some don't, its random. But there has to be some models that are confirmed to work.......

Please list yours if you have one working with 64 bit.

Mine is one of the old IDE internal, silver ones. At the time it was the largest you can get, now a meager 120GB. I can give you a specific model number when I get home.

What, your rep must be crazy. ALL drives work with vista 64.

Maybe hes talking about that crummy software all manufacturers throw on there that that might not work...but real computer users format the drive right away and remove it anyways. The drive itself will work perfectly, not matter what it is.

i had to return two WD Passports because they didn't work with Vista 64bit. Its stated on microsoft that they only support certain drives.

It's a fact a lot do not work with Vista 64bit. I'm sure some do, I'll check out the WD Element next.

So get your facts straight before telling people they all work with Vista 64bit.

btw, i laughed when i saw your 6000+ posts. "prove me wrong" who says that on the internet forum? what a nerd

    haha

You seem to be wrong dude. And it seems like you've done something wrong when you didn't get yours working in 64bit vista. Because, see the above posts, they all got it working.

And it's wrong to act like a , we're here to help each other, and if you did something wrong with your drive, we're glad to help, but not with that attitude.

Btw, personally from my 10years of experience, i can't even come up with even 1 reasons why it wouldn't work in vista.

Why is everyone jumping on this guy? It seems totally possible to me that certain SKU's of WD Passports don't work under Vista... of course it would only be certain ones, but it's TOTALLY POSSIBLE. Why is everyone demanding some proof, as if he can provide more than "it did not work in Vista x64 for me." Think about how that's going to make him feel.

Looks like a driver issue to me, perhaps it was an MS goofup. Make sure you have SP1 installed (I know pre-SP1 had some issues with USB devices) and check out some of the above links. Good luck.

AND ON THE OTHER SIDE OF IT, SAM.

You came to our forum asking us for help. I think you're in no place to start with name calling. So what if he has 6000 posts? Some people enjoy helping others. If it were not for nerds like us, the common clueless and illiterate computer user like you would be pretty SOL when you needed to find assistance to a problem like this.

Ouch calling me a nerd. Yes i have an engineering degree. Yes ive just about completed a networking degree as well. Yes i have just completed 4 cisco courses with 90+% grades on their exams to which i can now take and pass the ccna. As well as about to take several microsoft certification courses. Yes i want a job in IT, and should have one in a few more months. Does that make me a nerd? of course it does. Whats wrong with that? I had to laugh when you tried making fun of me for being smart. I'll soon be the guy running your IT department and the one you run to for help when nothing works, and if you work in IT too, I'd be your boss. So there :p

The reason i said prove me wrong is because i have never heard of such a problem and it seems rather odd that it would happen. I wasn't denying the possibility, but merely asking for some proof in backing up what you said. If there were several websites out there that agreed with what your friend i mean "rep" told you then your point would hold valid in my opinion, and a lot of others as well.

Hope this makes sense before you start getting all defensive and calling people smart for insults :)

As hep pointed out, there are several sites backing up what you said, which is what i was asking for initially. Yet none of the links actually show vista as a problem. They all show it leading to power issues that the computer has by not giving enough power to the usb hard drive. This is a computer hardware problem not the drives problem, and especially not vista x64 problem. That said, you should still feel comfortable in buying whatever drive you like and if it doesn't work, all places of purchase should be willing to take it back in exchange for a different model.
