I am planning to buy an external monitor for my notebook.

Something 20-30', with very good color reproduction and great viewing angle. Price doesn't matter.

Anyone with a strong opinion on some particular brand would be more than welcome. Thanks!

In my opinion Samsung monitors are the best, they are a bit pricey, but you pay for quality.
Lg also makes good lcd's, and so does Dell.
Actually Dell probably sells the best price to quality monitors.

I second Samsung and Dell. They seemed to be the best when I was researching monitors.

yeah, dont go with any screen over 24". It seems that the price doubles when you want to go an inch over 24".
The 21 and 24" monitors will be a good choice, but you should not have to pay over $400 for one.

How's about a 24", 30-bit HP Dreamcolor LP2480zx! It's the only announced 30-bit display that I'm aware of. Otherwise, I like all of the Apple Cinema Displays. Prices on the 30" have fallen a lot, and if I had the space and the $$ for the Mac Pro to accompany it, I'd own one already.

A, I already ordered the NEC. All reviews were consistently positive in the areas that I care the most (real-life viewing angles, color correctness, response time, brightness uniformity).

Wow, at this $$$$ price I would wait until there's a substantial user feedback on the HP. 30-bit sounds very interesting, thanks for pointing that out.

Alas, Apple products are out of question for me.

NEC makes some great professional grade monitors. Photographers and other graphics pros tend to dig them, but I'm afraid that particular monitor has a really slow ms response time (16!) which means expect ghosting when playing video or gaming.. prob wasn't the best choice. That monitor was not meant for moving images.

If you want one that is along the same quality check out some Eizo Nano, but make sure to check the ms response times.
Here’s a few options in around the same price range:

    Larger panels are more expensive.

All the Nano are smaller than 26' ?

About the response time, there are people upset about gaming in some 5ms monitors, while others are happy about their 16ms ones. Based on that I suspect some manufacturers make misleading ms ratings. 16ms ~ 60 FPS, which should be plenty for video and for games, I think.

Here's an interesting discussion about the NECs video performance, where the monitor seems to do fine:

    Thanks for your input.

Nope they go all the way up to 30" but they're way more expensive. This is the homepage: http://www.eizo.com/products/lcd/index.asp The SX2761W (~1800), SX3031W (~$3000) would both be amazing if you don't mind the price. Also the
ColorEdge CG301W but that one is from their professional graphics line and it comes with a shading hood and a calibrator and it costs $5000 soo..

I had a NEC monitor from the same series and I had ghosting issues. If you don't have any when you get it please post back. It will be good information to have.

    Arrived yesterday.

No ghosting in video and in games, the monitor is fully suitable for fast scenes. Give 16ms response rating little attention when making up your mind.

Viewing angles and colors are unmatched.

Quality of pictures is excellent. The only problem I have is the sharpness of letters in texts. Looks like my notebook's Samsung WSXGA+ is easier on my eyes than the NEC*. I don't know what it may be.

    *see below for update!

One note here to add: the new laptops, at least from Dell, seem to be heading towards using DisplayPort as their digital output, as opposed to HDMI, or DVI. Of course, VGA is still offered, but VGA performance at WUXGA isn't great.

So when shopping for a large LCD that you're going to keep for maybe a laptop or two, keep this in mind.

Personally I just bought a new Dell 2408WFP and I'm pretty happy with it, although I wish my laptop supported digital output.

Samsungs are very nice indeed - and you could have this 27" Samsung 275T+ for $980

I'd also recommend a similar sized (or larger) Dell screen... but Newegg don't stock Dell monitors for some reason

I figured why texts were blurry: I connected the monitor to an analog VGA output. As soon as I replaced my video card with one that has a nice DVI-D output, I saw what a beast NEC 2690WUXi is.

Monitors like this are not meant to be connected via the analog D-SUB interface: they will look like any other LCD, and you'll wonder "why the $1,200 price tag???" ;)

Via digital interface, NEC provides image worth three times the price. Stellar colors, razor-sharp text, CRT-like viewing angles in all directions. I confirm that the monitor has crisp, ghosting-free performance with DVDs and games, easily 5/5.

I gladly recommend it as a top choice for photo editing and fast action scenes.
