I am buying the dv9700t within a couple of weeks and I want to get it with the 64-bit Vista Ultimate and 4GB RAM but I want to order it with the 2GB and buy my own 4GB from NewEgg. My question is what is the fastest/best RAM that the dv9700t will support?

    Thanks!

This is the fastest laptop 2 GB x 2 memory Newegg has, with lower latency than your standard RAM. Most has CAS latency 5; this has 4. I'm not sure it's worth the extra cost, but if you want the best, that's what you want.

If you mix that new low latency ram with any existing ram it will all run at the highest latency present which means you need to buy all new ram to have it run at the faster speed.

The Core 2 processors in general are not that sensitive to changes in memory timings nor speed; the low latency memory is not worth that much more.

I just bought the dv9700t (still waiting for it); the RAM upgrade to 4GB on HP's site was $300. I found a Kingston 4GB RAM kit for the machine here...

    http://shop.kingston.com/partsinfo.asp?ktcpartno=KTH-ZD8000B/2G

The model number is : KTH-ZD8000B/2G and It is the recommended Ram for the HP dv9700t. It is currently on sale for $49 per stick at shop.kingston.com. I bought two sticks (4 GB) at $98 (free shipping and no tax).

I'll sell the RAM that comes in the machine hopefully for ~$50 and save ~$250. I wish the computer manufacturers would quit screwing their customer on Ram. Most of the upgrades are reasonable, but Dell, HP, Gateway, Apple, all put the screws to the customer whenever it comes to RAM upgrades.

    Isn't DDR2 800 faster than DDR2 667?

Yes but Intel-based laptops can't run it at it's full speed, 800Mhz. It downclocks to 667Mhz. If you had a Turion CPU, then yeah that would be a good upgrade. :)
