I'm looking to replace my Scorpio 80GB on my T61 with a rather big HDD. I have had positive experiences with Hitachi in the past. Old 7K100 on my T42p was noisy but bearable. I'm looking for newer and biggest 5400rpm drives that are significantly faster than my WD800BEVS.

    Hitachi 5K320 HTS543232L9A300
    Seagate 5400.5 ST9320320AS
    Fujitsu MHZ2320BH
WD Blue WD3200BEVT (Said to be noisy, but I find it quiet)

I don't think the WD3200BEVT is said to be noisy, but it's hot and takes a lot of power. It's actually said to be quiet here: http://techreport.com/articles.x/15079/14

The biggest SATA 2.5" drive is a Samsung HM500LI. Uses a lot of power and has slow acces times. It has fast transfer rates.

I'd recommend Hitachi 5K320 or Seagate 5400.5 for quick and quiet.

go for the 5K320, a friend of mine at school just got one, and it is so quiet you cant hear it unless you are defragging. He has a T61, and those little rubber grommets which surround the harddrive are actualy pretty good at keeping the noise/vibrations down.

Any of the drives Andy mentioned are good.

I believe, John Ratsey has the fujitsu drive mentioned and he says its quiet and really fast.

I've got two of the MHZ2320BH, partly because they were the cheapest of the 320GB HDDs in UK. It was quiet in my Zepto. However. one has just gone into my Dell E6400 and is more audible than the Samsung HM160HI that it replaced. It's not loud, but I can hear that it is doing something (the Samsung was very quiet). The Fujitsu is also running slightly warmer, but the Samsung has the advantage of only one platter to spin. The Fujitsu is cooler than the WD2500BEVS, but maybe WD improved the power efficiency with the WD3200BEVT.

Which is the HDD recommended to buy within a retail store such as Compusa, CircuitCity, Best Buy, etc. I mean not all the models listed above are available purchasing physically, I do not live in the US but travel often to Texas state, particularly the border, Laredo & McAllen.

hmm, best buy usually does not have a big selection, you may have to buy a portable external harddrive and take the harddrive out to get the one you want.

At the Best buy near me, they sell really old hardware for like 10x what its actually worth. The other day I saw a 40gb 7200rpm desktop drive selling for $70. The one near me sucks, but if the best buy store in Texas is one of the bigger ones, than you may have a shot getting the one you want.

We have microcenters here in the North east, I dont know if their are any in Texas, but if their is, Microcenter is where you want to go.

Seems ebay is my only choice. 2 years ago I bought a new 7K100 for my T42p shipped from USA. Looking at Compusa it seems they have good drives, although I don't know if they have in in their Laredo store.

Compusa sells the 5K320 online at 90USD. They have a physical store on Laredo but don't know if they have them in stock there.

    HEHE, ups.

Anyways, the WD3200BEVTS beat the 5K320 right? I'm still figuring out a wayt obtain one of those 5400rpm dense drives shipped to Mexico.

Yes 3200BEVT is faster in performance but uses more power.
