    This is just something I'm personally curious about.

    I wonder if anyone's done any research, even if it's just into the relative quality of chipsets fitted to notebooks, in terms of output power, SNR, etc.

    The Macbook Pro's for example are one of the few which has built-in optical output, but the analog signal is still sometimes beset with squirkles and fzzts which I don't hear on a huge variety of other machines.

    On some others, I can get a reasonably clean sound, but it has the power of a gnat squeak.

    Just wondering.
