Correct me if I'm wrong but...all newer laptops to my understanding that use the newer generation of PM CPU's (PM Dothan), that run at 533FSB use DDR2 RAM, and run at dual channel. Unless an older motherboard like the Dell B130, where the motherboard restricts the CPU FSB to 400 Mhz. Did you purchase a computer recently "dead red eyes"? If you gave us the model # we should be able to find out if it supports dual channel ram.

Only newer intel laptops can use dual channel; Turion is a socket 754 processor which doesn't support dual channel.

All notebooks that are Sonoma or Core Duo support Dual Channel. Dothan (735,745,755 etc.) do not support Dual Channel.

For Dual Channel you need to have same DDR of the same manifactor. Size must be as big too, so no 256 en 512 or something.

To check if your laptop is running Dual Channel, download CPU-Z. Very handy and small program to see all the specs of your CPU and DDR

You just need 2 of the same types of RAM: 2 512MB sticks are Dual Channel and so on

But if you have 1 256MB stick, and 1 512MB stick: your not in Dual Channel.

    Quite simple ;)

Here is a guide that explains RAM

I'm currently trying to find what I need in a computer, and it's taking forever to find out all the stuff I need and I feel like my **** head is going to explode. ..

I'm using some audio DAW programs right now on my desktop (amd athalon 64 3500+ (2.25ghz), 2 gig Super Talent PC3200, Abit AV8 Motherboard. ) And Reason 3.0 is a RAM hog, and I have to have a 7,200rpm 8Mb cache HDD cause Reason is constantly reading audio samples off of my harddrive. My computer supports dual channel thing, and the program runs great. thing is, is I really want to get an AMD laptop, but if they don't have those speeds ... I might have to go for INTEL. I need whatever it's going to take to run these RAM intensive programs well. I don't want to fire this up in a laptop, and find out what I do on my old desktop is better than a new laptop.

I really hope that I can figure this whole **** thing out soon, so I can just buy my laptop.

So what can you guys tell me? Thanks so very much for all the help.

You CAN dual channel with different size sticks on a Sonoma platform.

You won't be able to match that performance on any laptop (except maybe that gigantic 19" one with the sli vid cards, and desktop components)....

For something comparable to your desktop (probably still slower, but not significantly), you'd be looking for a ~2.1+ghz cpu (either AMD Turion or the Regular Pentium M), or a Core Duo Processor.

The Core Duo will probably be the best choice considering prices now. 2GB of DDR2 667mhz ram.

Dual 7200RPM Laptop HD's in a Raid Array? I don't know who offers this, but I'm sure some company does. Alienware?

It's going to cost $$$, and even then, you're probably not going to even match the performance of your desktop.

If you don't need complete portability, you'd probably be much better off with a SFF computer.

Eh, your laptop's dual channel compatible. If you look at the age of the posts, they were over a year ago.
