Our new AMD based HP dv6000 laptop has a hard drive that makes clicking/grinding noises.
We took it back today to where we bought it and they are going to test it.

    Worse case scenario:
They find nothing wrong with it.
I was thinking I could buy another HDD that hopefully was quieter and then install XP PRO instead of the Vista that came with it.

The guy at the computer store told us there are just 2 brands of HDD for laptops; Hitachi and Toshiba. Ours is a Hitachi.
    Is this true?

What is the quietest HDD made for laptops?

    Any other ideas?

And also, the fan is sure noisy at high speed. Any higher quality fans that would be quieter?

    Thanks

He might mean that they only carry Hitachi and Tosiba Laptop HDD at their store, because Seagate, and Western Digital makes HDD too.
Western Digital HDD makes pretty quiet drives. I would recommend them.
You wouldn't really be able to get a quieter fan, you can undervolt the cpu so to make it not as hot and thus less fan on time.

Might want to check out SilentPCReview.com. They test hard drives and such. Both Seagate 7200RPM drives are amongst the quietest I've ever used though I think it's a bit of a luck of the draw.

Dont forget samsung, they make laptop drives.

Out of the two mentioned, take a hitachi over a toshiba.
Hitachi has much better quality, and durability than a toshiba drive.

A grinding noise doesn't sound healthy. However, if what you are hearing is the clicking noise from head movements then Hitachi offer the Feature Tool utility, which includes:

Let us all step back and think common sense for a second. Other than John pointing out that grinding is not good and may be a problem to start talking brands and how "quiet" they are is unlikely to give satisfaction to OP. I have Hitachi and seems quiet to me, then again it is not used much. Is it possible, dare I say that the amount of RAM is short? So every time anything is done it hits the HDD? If that is the case no HDD change will help. Also with todays technology I doubt significant difference in noise between brands. Noise would cause heat because noise is energy, so all brands limit, noise is friction. All I am saying is I doubt different brands will help OP, More RAM.

Well it said my HDD was supported, in the PDF manual, for "Acoustic Management" feature, but when I tried it out the software said "not support drive".

    Bummer.

    Thanks for the help.

Another issue with this notebook is the continual seeking the hard drive does (which highlights the noise problem).
I have never seen a hard drive light so darn busy when the computer is just sitting there doing nothing.
I removed all startup progs via MSCONFIG.
