Two options for a hard drive....I don't know much about different hard drive brands and quality, and was wondering what others thought? Had good or bad experiences with one or the other? Thanks.

    Option 1.

    Option 2.

If you don't need any of the backup software and stuff, I'd vote that you buy your own drive and enclosure separately... then you know exactly what you're putting in your external device. You can just buy the cheapest 1TB drive with a solid warranty and not have to worry about it for the next 5 years.

Well, actually this isn't for me, but for someone who probably just wants to do the easy thing, and may use the backup software. At any rate, if you had to choose, any opinions? :)

    pix,
i wouldnt go with either, but if you can only get those two, I would go with the WD.
Western digital has a very easy to use system and their software is pretty handy.
I must say that alot of people have had dying wd externals, but the problem is either caused by one of two things:
    1) people forcing the power cable in to far, breaking the powr in port off,
    and
    2) the harddrive adaptor crapping out.

Now, if the thing is cared for it will last a long time. I am actually using the sata to usb adaptor from a my book with my hitachi harddrive in my external, and everything has been fine for over a year.

Just a note, it will probably be cheaper to get a more stylistic enclosure separately and than a really well renouned drive for the inside.

I'd trust WD over LACIE, which I've never heard of.

I think I would go with the WD drive, based on it's very nice compatibility and ease of use with Mac OS X, plus they come with a 5-year Manufacturer's warranty, AND they are very reliable and don't have a history of dying. So all-in-all, I would go with the WD, also because they are a very well-known company and have a great product.

I've never really had any experience or heard anything about the Fantom drives, but I've got to say, that's a darn good price for that. :p
