If you have to choose between the two, which one would it be? (Both are TN) I'm planning on getting PVA/IPS later.

    SAMSUNG 245BW: www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...rs+-+LCD+Flat+Panel-_-SAMSUNG-_-24001234#spec

    NEC ASLCD24WMCX-BK: www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824002359&Tpk=ASLCD24WMCX

Here's the spec for my rig:

    Window Vista Home Premium
    Q6600 Quad-Core (8MB L2 cache,2.40GHz,1066FSB)
    2GB Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 800MHz - 2 DIMMs
    nVidia GeForce 8800 GTX 768MB x 2
    500GB - 7200RPM, SATA 3.0Gb/s, 16MB Cache

    ---

    On to the the comparison:

I made a chart of the differences between these two LCD's (They're pretty much 90+% identical spec-wise).

All I need now is you guys' opinion. This will be my first LCD ever, and I will mainly be using it for casual stuff (gaming, surfing, etc). The 245BW seems to be 10x more popular than the NEC, though. Thoughts?

The difference there seems to be that the NEC can function as a television. Other than the inputs they are very similar. Samsung is a bigger name, but both Samsung and NEC have been around for a long time, so it isn't like NEC is some tiny display company.

I'd buy this new model Samsung that Best Buy has on sale this week:
    Samsung 2493HM
Or spend +$100 for the 26" model:
    Samsung 2693HM
Both have HDMI inputs, making them very nice companions for newer settop boxes and game consoles as well as computers. Monoprice has nice HDMI switches and cables you can use to share the monitor if you have more than one HDMI device.

    Definitely with the Samsung.
Nec makes lower quality screens, which will not last as long.
Samsung in my opinion makes the best hdtv's, plasmas and lcd's. They are durable, well made, and they have a nice finish to them.
Plus Samsung screens are made in Korea and usually assembled in Mexico, which is much better than a screen designed in Japan and made in China.

I would go for the Samsung
Dont buy anything at Best Buy, just cause their name implies cheap prices, there stock is usually 1.5-2x the price of the items which can be found at online stores

By the way, this site has that Samsung monitor for ~$100 less than Newegg ($325)

Make the right choice and spend $100 less than you intended to pay

If budget is not the main concern, I would say, go with a s-pva panel.
Tn panels have color accuracy problems and side views are not great.
A quality panel would definitely justify the extra money spent on.
You might consider Samsung's 245T model which has plenty connections and a quality panel. Also double check the pixel-pitch before buying, since at this size a bigger pixel size can be quite annoying.

That is one of NEC's consumer grade monitors, therefore its quality is nowhere near as high as NEC's MultiSync range.

Although the NEC has component input, which is useful if you have a playstation or xbox you want to use with the panel, it has an absolutely rubbish stand. If you have worked with monitors before, you should know how important the stand is.

I would recommend the Samsung if you're only going to use the LCD with your computer.

Don't buy a Samsung TN panel. Especially not the one on sale at best buy. Larger (24") TN panel have large shifts in color unless you plan on sitting still and not moving while viewing. If you are paying all that money get something good and not bottom of the barrel. Get the Samsung 245T like someone mentioned.
