Hi! I've googled for a long time now, but I've yet to find any good information about the Mobile Sempron 3800+ processor... You see, I'm comparing between two eqally priced laptops with the following specifications:
Laptop A (HP 6715S): Mobile Sempron 3800+ @ 2.2 GHz with 1GB RAM, ATI Radeon X1250 GPU and 120GB HD.
Laptop B (Toshiba Satellite L300-17K): Intel Celeron M 560 @ 2.13 GHz with 1GB RAM, Intel GMA X3100 GPU and 160GB HD.
I know that the X1250 is better than the X3100, but since I really don't know what CPU is the best, the X1250 could very well be bottlenecked by the 3800+... I'm planning on using the computer for some gaming (Half-Life 2 at dxlevel 8.1, possibly even Team Fortress 2), so the performance of the GPU is kind of important for me. So which CPU is the winner?
Please help so that I can finally decide!

P.S. Sorry if this should have been in "What laptop should I buy", but since the the only thing I'm asking for is the CPU, I thought that I should post my thread here. D.S.

The Sempron uses the cool and quiet technoloy hense runs cooler than the Celeron. Speed wise both are about the same
-
The Semperon is a better processor than the Celeron M. Celeron's do not have any power management or speedstep built into them, so they will run much hotter. Plus, Celeron's are at the lowest of the charts in comparison to any other processor. The semperons are down their too, but they have an upper hand over the celeron's.
The thing is, the toshiba is going to be better, cause you can upgrade that Celeron to a speedy core 2 duo processor, which will beat out the fastest AMD turion processors which the ho can support.
If you are not thinking about upgrading the cpu now, or in the future, than go with the Semperon system, cause it will be faster than the Celeron M.
You are correct with the X1250 as being more powerful than the X3100, but I am not sure if either of them are going to play those games well on low settings.
What is your budget, cause you may be able to get mre value from another system.
Check out the Dell coupon section, cause usually their are big coupons, and you can get a far better system in your price range.
Also, check out the buy and sell section, cause their have been plenty of laptops up for sale their, which may be in your price range.

About the games: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZeGok2zdMXA (Better CPU, but still...).
The upgrade part sounds really nice. I hadn't taken that in consideration! But still, Core 2 Duo costs quite alot... My budget is 4000 swedish crowns, but translated to what laptops cost in the US, that's roughly 400 or a bit more USD.
Will the Dell coupons work in Sweden? I already have a 5% student discount there, but if there are better coupons I'll look into it!
Also, thanks for the great responses! -
That is a good question, I have no clue if the dell coupons work in Sweden. The only way to know, is for you to put a dell laptop in your shopping cart, and then try applying the coupon code. If it works, it works, if not well it doesnt.
In that price range, look into the Dell Vostro series, usually they have really good price to value ratios.
Upgrading the cpu to a core 2 processor will be expensive, since a decent one is around $200 or more USD, which may be really out of your ballpark considering the currency difference.

Well, seems the coupons have expired now... Shame, though, as it seemed to work!
And in Sweden, the Vostro line is only availiable to corporations.
I think I might go for the HP, since the better battery life and less heat really makes the laptop portable. I don't really need the extra performance from the Core 2 Duo, since I'm not really looking for much power (I have a nice dekstop for that!), but more something that I can use when at school or such. Also, it seems like the HP also have built in Bluetooth! The only thing that I'm not getting is the extra 40 GBs the Toshiba sports.
Thanks for the great help, much appreciated!

US coupons will not work in Sweden or any where else as far as I know.
Here in Holland we have dutch forums where they post the coupons. -
Well good luck with the new HP, if you ever decide to upgrade the harddrive, memory or processor, the wonderful folks at notebook review can help you out
After purchase, I would advise upgrading to at least 2-3gb of memory, cause that will greatly speed up your system. 1gb of memory is not really enough to run vista properly.

Id go with the sempron cpu as it has step speed ( not sure what amd calls it ) so it can run slower to make less heat when not in a demanding task. Also the graphics card is nicer and some times you can even overclock IGP's at least in the case of an nvidia 7150 iv seen. Thats just my opinion good luck.

amd calls it cool and quiet. It works basically the same way as intel speed step does.

the Celeron is likely to run always at 2.13 ghz
The semprom will run at one of the following speeds depending on the software you're using. if you're application is demanding the speed will go up, otherwise it will go down.
0.8 ghz
1.0 ghz
1.2 ghz
1.4 ghz
1.6 ghz
1.8 ghz
2.0 ghz
2.2 ghz -
Go for the Sempron. In the single core desktop arena, while there are mixed views on Athlon and Pentium superiority, Sempron almost always fares better than its Celeron counterpart ... especially in gaming terms (Celerons only hold their own during multitasking and movie rendering).
Besides, the GPU bundled with it is more games-friendly (i.e. less issues). -
Which one would be the best? Sempron or Celeron?
