I used to have a Geforce Go 7900GTX in my Dell XPS M1710.
But the video adapter is now broken, not sure how it happened. Overheating I guess.
I need a new video adapter but I do not know how to find one that is compatible..? How can I figure that out?

Are you still under warranty

Take it apart. You will need to find out what format connector it uses, and whether it is possible to take it out separately.
I have seen a topic where an Alienware with the 7950 GTX was upgraded to an ATI Radeon HD 3870 (Mobility). -
The laptop is 3 years and 3 months old. -

The Dells use a Dell proprietary connector. You can try searching Ebay for those. I believe the cards for the E1705 work as well.
-
You can use the Ati X1400, nvidia 7800GS, 7800GTX, Quadro FX1400m, nvidia 7900GS, 7900GTX, 7950GTX or the Quadro FX2500M.
The XPS1710 is the same as the E1705 and inspiron 9400
So if you find a graphics card on ebay from any of those three dell models, you can plug the graphics card in and go.
Please note that you will need to take your laptop apart to change the graphics card. In my experience, it will take 15-20 minutes to safely dismantle your laptop, 5-10 minutes to clean any dust/grime inside, than a minute or two to remove and replace the graphics card, and another 15-20 minutes to reassemble.
If you need to swap heatsinks, cause there were two heatsink styles offered, you will need a TORX wrench to swap them. I believe it is 3 or 4 screws needed to do this.
Good luck, you may find this website handy

No, I do not glory is contradicting you. Knowledge and factual information is of the utmost importance. Most people who come on here come to find the answer, rather than get dug into a deeper hole. I know the feeling when I unknowingly took false information read on here as truth. It only makes the situation worse. I simply stated procedure based on experience.
Sorry if I was rude
