For the love of God, I just put my new G.Skill 64GB SSD in my computer and even a right click takes 10 to 15 seconds to bring up a menu. Outlook takes 2 minutes to OPEN, as does IE7. OK, I was too poor to spring for the Intel SSD, but I thought for sure I would have something that worked at least as fast as my WD 640GB.
I was woefully wrong.
One thing, I did clone it from an install of XP that has been around for a long time and been installed in many computers with no fresh install becasue I do not have time to do a fresh install and try to find all my dreamweaver addins, among other things.
So, is it possible that this is why it is so slow? I have 3GB left of the 64GB, but that is a non issue with SSD.
EVERYTHING is slower. Booting to desktop, opening programs, there is this wicked brain numbing LAG when I try to do anything. I relaly NEVER expected something this pathetic. It is as if I put a USB flash drive into my computer. then all of a sudden all the things I click on open up right quick after a 60-80 second lag.
I may be exaggerating, but I assure you that it is not by much. Anyone who asks me to submit a graph of read/write speed will be in big troubleI do not care what any graph says, this thing is unuseable.
If there is not a way to fix this, I am in trouble, as NewEgg has NO RETURN policy on this. now I know why!
I am going to break the myth of SSD and let people know that it is not even worth THINKING about getting one of these cheap ones. It is not technology worthy of 2008. I am going to write the most scathing review on Newegg they have ever dreamed of seeing in their worst nightmares.
I am going to try cloning my laptop drive which is a fresh install of VISTA. When I get over being so upset. TWO MINUTES to open IE7.
Maybe that clone will be better.
It is truly weird.
Thanks for letting me rant. I really figured that becuase this was a current offering by G.Skill and possibly third generation of this type of SSD, that I wouldd be able to bide my time until I could get a REAL SSD.

Yeah, I guess you are right. I turned off write caching and page file, and it SEEMS to be at least a bit more useable.
Sure is dissapointing. It says right on the BOX, "Enables rapid system response".
I MAY try a fresh install of VISTA just to see what is what. I can just plug in my old drive and be up and running quite smoothly to do my daily business.
I was really hoping to just use that 640GB WD as online storage -
A tip from me to you, don't even try vista with that crappy SSD, just do a fresh install of XP. Vista + crappy SSD's is not the way to go.
I'd be curious to see what graphs would say though as you'd know directly if something really is wrong with the SSD or if there is anything left to do to improve. -
Got it. I only said that becasue if it did work, I would prefer VISTA. I really like the big V, but I have the power to run it. New SSD aside
A miracle has happened. Wll, maybe. Since I turned off write cache and page file and REBOOTED, it works pretty well. I need to let Outlook take the time to open, but I had to do that with my other drive also. this is working much as I has suspected it would. Certain things are fast, and not that the lag has just about all but dissapeared, I may be good to go. Listening to some Zep while surfing and using some programs, which is what I normally do.
It is almost as if it learned how to operate. Admittedly, I was trying to open dfirefox with 43 tabs, which I did not know I was doing. no wonder that program lagged
here is a HDTUNE for you.Attached Files:

Well, just when I thought it was safe to go back in the water..... LAG started happening all over again.
Unuseable.
I guess my only chance is to reload XP from scratch, which I would do, but I am not willing to reload all my programs just to see what happens. It would just take too much time.
So, a call to NewEgg is looming in my future.
thank God for my WD 640!

I was able to get a RMA, with a 15% re-stocking fee. OK, I cna understand that, and I was willing to take that rick. I relaly wanted this drive to work out. There should be a big warning, NO BOOT DRIVE PLEASE!

I am sorry about your problems Cape Consultant, but your statement made me laugh. Some people went for the OCZ SSD drives and many have had horrible issues as well.
-
Do you have the Superfetch and automatic indexing shut off? Have you removed all your excess system restore points?
I'm running a 32GB Patriot on my HTPC and it is quite snappy. -

John, is yours the Warp v2? Hows the stuttering issues with that drive? I've read a bunch of reviews on these forums and it seems to be a mixed bag, some say absolutely no stuttering, others say its there. I'd like to pull the trigger on one since they're so cheap, but I'm a bit reluctant about stuttering problems MLC drives have with Vista.
-
John, I am quite sure I have indexing off as I never use it but I will double check. I am not sure how to turn off super fetch. I have XP is that a part of XP or just VISTA? Thanks,
Dave -
so my wide guess would be that you bought a MLC drive
biiiig mistake. Like huuuuge
I would not even take the Intels MLC - they tried to mask up the downs of the technology with onboard DRAM, but still -
Thanks for sharing. I'm in the process of canceling a purchase based on your experience. I think I'll wait.
-
Good point about the Intel also. I will be going SLC FOR SURE next time. And I hope **** soon too as I really like the whole idea of these.
-
Not that I am going to take the plunge right away, but if I were, would the Mtron 3500 64GB be a decent choice thta would allow me to have my boot and only drive be nice and fast and responsive? That is now the question.
I am going to take a last desperate move tonight with my G.Skill and see if maybe I inadvertently had an index service running or some weird thing. Maybe I will even turn off my Acronis service and see if that helps. i figure it must be tracking changes somehow so it can do an incremental backup. -
For some reason I thought you were running Vista. No superfetch in XP. -
THis is an HTPC and the drive is lightly used.
I went with an SSD to get rid of heat inside the HTPC chassis. -

Cape, there's a glowing review of the 128gb version of the G.Skill MLC drive you purchased here.
I found it for $225 new on another board so I decided to give it a shot anyhow. I'll be out of town until 11/21, so I won't be able to post my experience until early that following week. -
Thanks. -

So what are the good dives then. I was looking for a SSD and I don't want one of these. What companies make the good SSDs. Is Samsung OK?
Thanks,
Jeff -
thanks Allan.g, I checkd that out. reviews like that were the reason i checked it out in the first place. I may mess with it some more before I ship it back. Maybe uninstall Outlook completely and check my processes carefully to make sure there are no indexing ones. Also, I suspect but cannot prove thta another of my favorite programs, Acronis TrueImage could be suspect. Since I have givn up working my job on it, I could mess it up and am going to disk wipe it anyways before I return it
Good luck, very interested to know how it works out for you. Dave -
