The 30th is when it comes out from what I was told (could be wrong). But I dont see whats so great about it to make me want to shell out $200 for the upgrade. Is it worth the money?

I think its worth it, but I'm not getting it this week. Maybe in a few months.

I have no plans to upgrade my current notebook to Vista . . . I will save it for my next notebook. I know for certain that not all the hardware in my current laptop will be supported under Vista anyway.

I'm going to get it for free with my next laptop (only paying shipping), but I am also going to wait a few months before installing it because I've heard there are still a few bugs to play out.

I won't be because most programs I am using haven't really support vista yet. Probably will do when all the programs and drivers are supported, which probably will in a year or so.

People who rush out to get the next version of Windows as fast as they can are just stupid imo. At least wait a while for SP1...and maybe some programs...and maybe some drivers...and basically wait for it to build itself as the "standard OS." It's gonna take a while before it replaces XP.

But I think with Vista especially, like Phillip mentioned, I'm waiting on the 64-bit applications.

I won't get Vista until I purchase a new notebook--and my current system is only 7 months old, so it will likely be a while for me.

My business needs a new PC soon, and I'm going to try to get an XP machine for compatibility reasons. I'd also like for Vista and 64-bit to be a little more mature and widely supported before diving into it.

I will buy it after I finish building my new desktop. probably the end of February. But I will run it as a virtual machine inside of my regular XP OS. that way no nasty problems when/if it crashes/gets infected with viruses.

I will probably wait for a service pack first before installing Vista. I also haven't heard many good reviews about Vista (based on the articles I read from reddit.com ) Windows XP is sufficient for my needs as of now.

I choose to be a guinea pig by testing out Vista Beta and Vista RC1.

I now have Vista RC1 running on my two computers (notebook 32-bit, desktop on 64-bit), and I really like it.

I haven't experienced any compatibility problems or errors.

And 64-bit has soooooooooooo many less errors and compatibility problems than people have been talking about. The only oddity I've noticed is that it doesn't let me drag and drop some things, like music files from a folder into iTunes. Odd, but nothing to complain about.

    2. Vista Premium is too much $$$

if it wasnt for that I would get it.

Haha I know what you are thinking, and no, I'm not getting "teh-latest&vista^cracked(working_free_free.idiot.trojan.msi" off of Kazaa. I can get Enterprise from my university through the academic alliance (or is it TAP) program with MS.

I cannot think of any marginal benefits that Vista offers over XP, other than DX10. My impression of the OS is that it is slow, bloated, designed for DRM rather than performance, and hobbled with a UI that is aimed at morons who should not be using computers, to the detriment of those who simply want to be able to efficiently utilise a computer. Indeed, almost all of the 'benefits' that Vista has over XP are for those moron users, and or are to protect those users from themselves.

    Erm, no.

General lack of interest in an OS that so far seems to have a main benefit of "ohh it looks pretty".

I can use Windows XP just fine, I can use DOS just fine to do the things that windows XP doesn't let you do.

I might at some point in the very, very distant future buy Vista for my desktop, but certainly not before my RC1 key expires in June (since it works on Ultimate RTM). When Centrino Pro or K8L-M based notebooks are available, and I have more money, and consequently buy a new notebook, I'm sure it will come with Vista. Luckily I have a Student Edition Volume Licensed copy of XP Pro.

I think I am going to order Vista Business 64 bit free upgrade and just wait till summer or so to even think about installing it. I really just want to try out Aero, I doubt it will provide me with much of a practical/functional advantage. If I actually had to pay for it, I don't think I would get it until I bought a new machine, which would be a long time unless I decide to try building a desktop for a new hobby.

I am thinking of picking up the OEM Vista Home Premium. Installing on my desktop and experimenting with what older apps work vs. what don't. By not activating...I am not marrying the OEM to that machine. I just want to experiment. I am also very interested to see if Ghost 9 will work in Vista. Then I want to see what happens when I backup using the DOS Ghost 2003 and try to restore. Lots to play with. I already know that on my desktop, my ATI All in Wonder X800XT is going to pose problems with no new versions of Multimedia Center available.
Then, I will restore XP and all my apps back to normal and do the same on my laptop. See what works and what doesn't. Then...by not activating...I can put Vista in a box and sit on it for a month or two...and see what drivers are released. At this point, the only machine I intend to upgrade is my Dell 1505...but not all the drivers have yet been released. Dell needs to write a boot loader for Dell Media Direct for it to work in power off mode...so I'll wait.

I got a fairly significant student discount and pre-ordered Home Premium online yesterday. It should come later this week or early next week. Both Dell and Microsoft claim that I won't have any significant compatibility, driver, or software issues. Maybe I'm completely crazy for installing it this soon, but we'll see.

I'm guessing a lot of young folks here? I've used just about every version of pc-dos, ms-dos (bit of 4.0), dr-dos, all versions of windows 3 (also remember playing around with windows 1 or 2), win95, 98, ME (for a bit), XP, and now vista with no major problems. Jeez, I am one of many who made Bill gates what he is today, filthy rich. Vista looks solid, boots up faster (I recommend a flashcard for Readyboost) and even looks prettier and visually up to date. Take a chance in life, it's what made America great. :)

I am only old enough to remember using 3.1 on my family's first computer, an IBM with a 486 processor running at a speedy 25 Mhz, using 4 MB of RAM (I remember when my dad upgraded to 8 for like 200 bucks), and a 170 MB HD. I also never upgraded to Win95. Our next computer was a Dell PII 350Mhz with Win98. Next was my college computer, a Cyberpower with an 800 Mhz Athlon and a 16mb video card...running Win 98 was bought in 2000. I "upgraded" to XP Pro using a college network special edition in probably 2003. I'll try out my free Vista upgrade eventually with the new laptop, but as my history shows, I have never been in a rush to upgrade and it never really affected me.

Well...I purchased Vista Home Premium OEM as I said I would. Got it for $119 at MicroCenter. Installed on my desktop, which is more complicated than my Dell 1505. Left the Dell alone, for it has business apps I couldn't lose. So I installed what I could on the desktop to see what would happen.

    My Desktop specs:

    Asus P4C800E-Deluxe with P4-3.2 GHZ
    1 GB PC 3200 SDRAM
    ATI AIW X800XT
    SB Audigy 2 ZS
Two WD 74 GB 10,000 RPM Raptors in Raid 0 on Intel 802801ER
Epson 1660 Perfection Scanner (not on the approved list from MS)
    Epson Photo r300

For intent and purposes...I list just those...the Epson Scanner was not on the list of workable solutions from MS...but someone else did install and get the scanner to work.

Here are some things that did and did not work

DOS based program called SELECTOR from a company called RCS. I do music scheduling for some of my client radio stations. SELECTOR worked great in XP, for RCS rewrote and tweaked the program to run. Installed in Vista and seemingly works...but one issue...Command Prompt is small and can't work with the program until I figure out how to enlarge the CMD screen

Ghost 9 installs but does not run
Backed up the machine with Ghost 2003 in DOS boot mode and corrupted the Vista Loader...trashed out Vista

For anyone using Eudora E mail...version 7.1.0.9 has NO issues with Vista
ATI AIW X800XT. Catalyst 7.1 drivers released 1/29. Worked fine, but ATI neglected to release any Video Capture / Rage Theatre drivers...so no video. Until ATI releases WDM capture drivers...the AIW is not more than a stock X800XT. Not Vista's fault...but ATI's
During Installation...Windows Vista could not find my raid array...so I had to reboot, start installation again and use the last set of Raid Matrix Drivers for Windows XP released for my setup. The XP drivers ran fine...
I installed the Epson Perfection 1660 by first installing the Twain drivers...but did in Windows XP SP2 Compatibility Mode. Scanner worked as well as ever. Epson Smart Panel and Scan to Web, etc also worked flawlessly.
Installed the Drivers for the Epson r300 Photo printer...everything worked except the Status Monitor. When printing, it normally shows ink levels and progress. Doesn't do that in Vista. E mailed Epson about it and am awaiting an answer on how to fix the issue. Epson Print CD also works so I can still print graphics on CD/DVD
    Adobe Photoshop CS2...ran a bit slower...awaiting SP3 for it
MS Digital Image Suite 10th Anniversary Edition...flawless...Twain worked within and was able to tweak photos

That's as far as I got before I started testing backup software. After Ghost 2003 backed up Vista...I fdisked and tried to restore. I think that since older versions of Ghost don't give you the option to restore the MBR...that is where Windows loader became corrupt...not sure. Ghost 9, as I said would not open....but did install. Not sure I want to go out and purchase Acronis True Image 10 after reading all the nightmare stories about it's corrupted images that it creates. Guess if you want to backup your install...will have to wait until something reliable is released.

There are some things...I am going to reinstall Vista in a few days. I did not Activate it, for I really want to install it on the Dell...but right now, there are still some Drivers that Dell needs release before I am comfortable. Example...I have the Dell 1500 draft N card. I understand that MS put Broadcom drivers in Vista...but the drivers released by Broadcom in Nov for XP had security fixes in them. Also...Media Direct 3 won't work until Dell releases another patch for the boot loader. Seems that when you repair the boot loader to make Media Direct work in power off mode...you disable Vista's ability to boot.

Dell has done a pretty good job of releasing drivers...so I figure it is just a matter of time

BTW...On my desktop...the performance rating for Video and Hard Drives was 5.9...overall...my two and a half year old P4 rated a 4.5. Not too shabby. With 1 GB of Ram...and 256 on the Video card...AERO worked fine and Vista looked GREAT!

Seriously... looking at maybe 6 months to a year? Of course I might just upgrade this one.
